The northwest corner of the lake in Northeast Carry township resembles a curled lobster tail, while the lake extending eastward into Lobster township resembles a lobster thorax. The larger eastern arm of the lake extending southward is Big Claw and a smaller western arm is Little Claw. Lobster Stream connects the northwest corner of the lake to the West Branch Penobscot River {{convert|1.4|mi|km}} north of the lake.[2] Lobster Lake and the river are at a similar elevation; so the West Branch may temporarily reverse flow through Lobster Stream into the lake during peak runoff events from the western Maine highlands along the Canadian border. The lake has self-sustaining populations of native lake trout and land-locked Atlantic salmon; but brook trout populations are suppressed by competition from yellow perch and white perch.[4] Sources1. ^1 {{gnis|570140|Lobster Lake}} {{Penobscot River}}2. ^1 2 {{cite book |last= |first= |authorlink = |title =The Maine Atlas and Gazetteer |publisher =DeLorme Mapping Company |volume = |edition =Thirteenth |date =1988 |location =Freeport, Maine |page =49 |isbn =0-89933-035-5}} 3. ^1 {{cite web|url=http://www.pearl.maine.edu/Browseglobal.asp?PNI=LAKES_STREAMS&NoOfInputs=0&mode=DATA&TABLENAME=ADMIN_GMC03&action=DISPLAYFIELDS |title=Maine Lakes: Morphometry and Geographic Information |accessdate=31 July 2008 |author=Maine Depts. of Environmental Protection and Inland Fisheries & Wildlife |last= |first= |authorlink= |coauthors= |date=2005-08-04 |format= |work= |publisher=Senator George J.
