Before joining BioMarin in 2017, he had conducted research on the genetic basis of human diseases for over twenty-five years. He had previously served as a full professor at the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom, and at the University of Washington and Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in the United States. He subsequently entered the pharmaceutical industry as a senior vice president at GlaxoSmithKline. In this industry, he has attempted to translate the results of genetic research regarding the causes of human diseases into improved medical treatments.[2][3] He was elected to the Academy of Medical Sciences in 2005.
