The Lorraine 12D, also referred to as Lorraine-Dietrich 12D, was a water-cooled V-12 engine, produced by the French company Lorraine-Dietrich between the late 1910s and early 1930s of the twentieth century. Developed to equip bombers in the final phase of the First World War, it played an important role in the development of commercial aviation after the war, being built under licence by Isotta Fraschini, as well as in France,. Design and developmentThe development of aviation in the early twentieth century was heavily influenced by the demands of both sides during the First World War. In addition to the improvement of the technique in the construction of the cells of the new aircraft, the mechanical companies were tasked with making more and more powerful aeronautical engines in order to balance the technical level of the enemy models.[1] In 1916 the French engineer Marius Barbarou, head of the company's motor development, decided to create a new project taking advantage of the characteristics and the experience acquired while making the previous Lorraine-Dietrich 8B engine. to reuse numerous mechanical parts of the previous model would have led to a faster start to mass production, an essential requirement in the phases of the conflict.[1] The new engine was built by extending the base and adding another 4 cylinders, two per bank, maintaining the 60 ° V architecture and the bore of {{cvt|120|mm}}.[1] The 12D was approved in January 1917 at a power of {{cvt|350|hp}}. Mass production started at the Argenteuil factory under pressure from Marine Nationale, which intended to use the new unit on its seaplanes. The first 50 were built, but in the meantime the 12D was immediately the subject of improvements that managed to raise the power to {{cvt|400|hp}}, creating the 12Da, which was more powerful than any of the engines then made in France; 400 produced.[1] The First World War ended and the need to have available new engines was lost, so production had to turn to the civil aviation market. Damaged engines at the end of their working life were reconditioned using the parts of the units that were no longer recoverable. The commercial success in the civil field justified a further development of the engine introducing in 1921 the 12Db of which 850 copies would be made. In 1924 the Italian company Isotta Fraschini bought the rights for the engine under the license of the 12Db, which was also marketed under its own company name, Isotta Fraschini 12Db, used to power some Italian aircraft of the time.[2] Variants
