Benjamin Gerard Coyle-Larner[2] (born 6 October 1994), better known by the stage name Loyle Carner, is an English hip hop musician and actor.[3] His sound has been described by NME as "sensitive and eloquent" and by The Guardian as "confessional hip-hop".[3][5]He was raised by his mother and stepfather who influenced his talents from a young age, whereby he went on to pursue a career in music.

Carner's debut album, Yesterday's Gone (2017), was nominated for the 2017 Mercury Prize.[4]

His stage name Loyle Carner is a spoonerism of his double-barrelled surname as well as a reference to his childhood struggle with ADHD and dyslexia.[5]

Career

Early life

Carner was born in Lambeth, South London[6] and brought up in South Croydon[7] by his mother, Jean, his step-father, Nik, and his younger brother, Ryan.[8] He has had minimal contact with his father, who is of Guyanese descent.[8] He has been diagnosed with ADHD and dyslexia.

At the age of thirteen, Carner had a small role in the 2008 film 10,000 BC, credited as "Young Hunter".[9] He started his secondary education at Whitgift School in South Croydon, and moved on to study at the Brit School, and began studying for an acting degree at the Drama Centre.[10][8] In 2014, he dropped out of the Drama Centre after his stepfather died of sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP), and decided to focus on his music.[10][8]

Music career

Carner played his first official gig at The Button Factory in Dublin, Ireland in October 2012 supporting MF Doom.[3] He released his first EP in September 2014, titled A Little Late, which was well received.[8][9] He supported Joey Badass on his UK tour and went on to play the 2015 UK festival season, including Glastonbury Festival.[10][21] He went on tour and collaborated with poet and spoken-word artist Kate Tempest in late 2015.[11] In October 2015 he played on Huw Stephens' BBC Radio 1 show as part of their Piano Sessions series.[12] In late August 2016, he supported Nas in his show at the O2 Academy Bristol.{{Citation needed|date=October 2016}}

His debut album, entitled Yesterday's Gone, was released on 20 January 2017.[13]

On 27 July 2017, it was announced that Yesterday's Gone, was nominated for the 2017 Mercury Prize (which was eventually won by Sampha).[4]

In March 2019, he announced that his sophomore album, Not Waving But Drowning, is due for release on 19 April 2019 through AMF Records.[14]

Personal life

Carner's stepfather, known professionally as Steven Vengeance, died in February 2014.[15] In his debut album Yesterday's Gone, Carner used samples of his stepfathers songs, with the title track written and performed by Vengeance alongside Misure La VerT concluding the album.[16]

Carner is a Liverpool F.C. supporter, although at concerts he wears his stepfather's Eric Cantona shirt; a passionate Man United supporter, Eric Cantona was his stepfather's idol. Carner named his 2016 tour after Cantona in memory of his stepfather.[8] He also supports Scottish football club Rangers F.C. and was quoted, "My grandad was a Glasgow Rangers fan. We used to go see Rangers play together."[17] He manages to fit all this in, despite his job being a full time hero who dabbles (24/7) in being a legend.
