A5335 Vulcano is an auxiliary ship that will enter in service with the Marina Militare in 2020.

She is designed to support fleet operations with fuel and dry stores. Along with another future sister ship, she is expected to replace the AORs Stromboli (A5327) and Vesuvio (A5329).

Vulcano was financed under the 2014 Naval Law,[5] for Euro 346 millions, then increased to Euro 374,6 millions, when length was elevated by about 12 m.

As part of the planned alliance between France's Naval Group and Fincantieri, France will buy four derivatives of the Vulcano design under the FLOTLOG project, scheduled to be delivered in 2022, 2025, 2027 and (subject to ratification of the next procurement plan) 2029.[6] France officially joined the program in October 2018.[7]

Design and construction

Vulcano is being built by Fincantieri with hull number 6259. The stern section is being built at the Riva Trigoso Naval Shipyard and the bow section is being built at the Castellammare di Stabia (Naples) Naval Shipyard. On the night of July 22/23, 2018, a fire broke out on the ship's stern superstructure.[8]Vulcano is designed as a support ship able to supply a large squadron at sea.[9]

As such, she has the capability to:

  • refuel ships
  • produce fresh water
  • carry cargo
  • Hospital NATO Role 2 LM [10]
  • conduct repairs at sea with integrated maintenance workshops

She has a cargo capacity of up to 15,500 t,

of which, "at least":

  • {{convert|7.655|t|LT|abbr=on|lk=in}} (9,000 m3) of NATO F76 diesel fuel [11]
  • {{convert|3.160|t|LT|abbr=on|lk=in}} (3,900 m3) of NATO F44/JP5 aviation fuel
  • {{convert|830|t|LT|abbr=on|lk=in}} of fresh water
  • {{convert|220|t|LT|abbr=on|lk=in}} of ammunitions
  • {{convert|40|t|LT|abbr=on|lk=in}} of meals (30,000 food rations)
  • 3 m3 of gasoline in barrels
  • {{convert|15|t|LT|abbr=on|lk=in}} of lubricant in barrels
  • {{convert|20|t|LT|abbr=on|lk=in}} of solid goods
  • up to 8 x ISO1C standard containers, {{convert|28|t|LT|abbr=on|lk=in}} each one
