Maggie (Margaret) FitzPatrick has been a philanthropy, communications and corporate affairs executive for more than 20 years. Currently, she is senior vice president of corporate affairs, philanthropy and customer engagement at Exelon (EXC), a publicly-traded Fortune 100 power generation, sales, transmission and delivery company.[1][2] In her capacity as the leader of the company's philanthropic efforts, she oversees the distribution of nearly $50 million in annual giving by Exelon.[3]

Personal life and education

A native of Delaware, FitzPatrick attended Syracuse University on a scholarship to play field hockey.[4][5] She received a Bachelor's degree in policy studies from the university's Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs. For two decades, FitzPatrick was the only field hockey player in Syracuse history to produce three assists in two games in a season.[6]

After moving to Washington, D.C. she also received a Master's degree in public policy from the George Washington University. Her first job after school was interning for then-Senator Joe Biden (D-DE).[4]

Career

FitzPatrick's career in communications and public affairs began with the global public relations firm Porter Novelli International.[7] In 1997, she joined APCO Worldwide, serving as a senior associate, then vice president of internet position, then senior vice president and director of the firm's technology public relations practice. Eventually, she was promoted to executive vice president in the DC office of the agency to join the health services corporation Cigna in 2010.[7][4]

FitzPatrick spent three years as chief communications officer of Cigna, reporting directly to CEO David Cordani.[8] She helped expand and strengthen the company's use of social media during her time with the launch of the broad consumer-facing "Go You" campaign.[9][10] She also served as the president of the Cigna Foundation in this role.[11] From there she joined pharmaceutical and healthcare giant Johnson & Johnson, again serving as chief communications officer.[12][13] About halfway through her tenure at the company, FitzPatrick undertook a complete reorganization of the communications team structure to centralize reporting around her office as opposed to the local business units. When she departed in 2016, FitzPatrick was credited with leading the company through a "significant modernization and transformation."[13]

In August 2016, FitzPatrick joined Exelon as senior vice president of corporate affairs, philanthropy and customer engagement. She led the energy giant's philanthropy arm to record levels of giving in 2017.[14] At the corporation, she presides over a team of ninety professionals, two-thirds of whom are women.[15] She is regarded as a leader on corporate inclusion and accountability.[16][17]

Other involvement

In her capacity as head of Exelon's philanthropy as well as in her private life, FitzPatrick serves on several nonprofit boards. She is a trustee of the Arena Stage theater company in Washington, D.C.[18] She also sits on the board of Bright Beginnings, a nonprofit organization that provides childhood and family learning centers for families experiencing homelessness in the nation's capital.[19] Previously, FitzPatrick was a boardmember for the National Partnership for Women and Families, Achilles International[20] and Companions for Heroes, which matches therapy dogs with returning military veterans.[5]
