The Malabar Group of Companies was founded by M. P. Ahammed in the year 1993.[2] He is also the company's current chairman.[3] Malabar Gold and Diamonds has more than 250 showrooms across 10 countries at present and it is one of the largest chain of jewellery stores in the world.[4] The company also owns a network of luxury watch boutiques across India, which services under the name Malabar Watches.[5] HistoryThe Malabar Gold company was established in the year 1993 by M. P. Ahammed. He was born on 1 November 1957 in Kozhikode, Kerala.[6] His father Mahmmad Kutty Hajee was a farmer by profession and his mother Fathima was a homemaker. At the age of 17, he started his first business venture of agro farming products.[7] In 1981, he started a trading business of spices and copra at the age of 24.[8] In the year 1993, he established a jewellery trading company called Malabar Gold with just a revenue of ₹50 lakhs, in his home town Kozhikode. The Malabar Group has over 250 showrooms across the world and currently, the number of outlets is expected to triple to almost 800.[9] The Malabar Group has been on an aggressive expansion drive since the year 2000 and more showrooms are expected to be opened in new territories.[10] In November 2018, Malabar Gold and Diamonds outlets were inaugurated in the United States, taking the brand's reach to 10 countries.[11] AssociationsThe Malabar group is involved with Green Thumb, a brand that produces organic farming products and Eham Digitals, an electronic gadgets and home appliances company.[12] AwardsThe Malabar group has been awarded with the 'Brand of the Year' award by Superbrands for five consecutive years (2013 - 2017).[13][14] Malabar Gold and Diamonds has also received an award by the 'Retail Jewellers India' organization in 2017 for their special contributions to the gemstone and jewellery industry.[15] In 2015, Malabar Gold company in Dubai, UAE created a Guinness World Record by producing the world's longest handmade gold chain.[16][17] The 22-carat gold chain, named as the ‘Dubai Celebration Chain’ measured upto 5 kilometres long, weighed 240 kilograms and had over 4 million links, which took 100 craftsmen over 45 days to produce.[18] Brand Ambassadors
IncidentsOn 20 May 2016, the Rolla outlet of Malabar Gold and Diamonds in Sharjah, UAE was robbed. Four thieves broke into the store and made away with 7kg of gold jewellery kept in display glass counters, around 3:50 am.[23] The Sharjah Police arrested 3 Pakistani nationals, who were involved in the robbery.
