HistoryHe was a enlightened ruler of Jawhar State. He built first school, dispensaries and installed a modern system of revenue collection, justice and public administration in Jawhar. He paid no tribute to the British Government. He was under regency of his mother Gopikabai. On 28th March 1875, Rani Gopikaba (regent) was dead. The direct management was assumed by collector and agent. On 22th January 1877, Malharrao assumed the full ruling powers. AdoptionAfter death of Narayan Rao Mukne on 13 July 1865, He was adopted by Narayan Rao's young Widow Lakshami Bai Mukne on the advice of Gopika Bai Mukne who was his mother and guardian when he was only ten years old. At the time of his adoption, The Jawhar State was attached to British Government and in the charge of mamlatdar of Dahanu and when adoption was sanctioned by British, The charge was entrusted to Gopika Bai Mukne on the conditions that Malhar Rao should be taught English language and be sent to Poona High School, A British officer should be chosen to manage the State who could not be dismissed without approval of the British Government. ManagersIn 1869, When he was fifteen years old, The British officials made an inquiry of records. British sent Mr. havelock, C.S . He was confused by records and dismissed the manager Kuvarji Shapurji. He was replaced by Mr. Jaisingh Rao Angre in 1870. Jaisingh was replaced by Mr. Shivram Nilkanth who remained in charge till the Malhar Rao Mukne came to be mature in 1877. StudyMalhar Rao Mukne educated in Poona in High School with English. In 1877, he studied privately. He also attended the Poona Judge Court to learn how to manage the state. MarriageOn 20th April 1874, he martied to Saraswati Bai who was daughter of Mahad Khan. Mahad Khan was Patil of Kalusta (Jagirdar in Jawhar State).
