She was the first female rector of a university in West Germany.[2][3]

Life

Becke-Goehring finished her Abitur in Erfurt in 1933.[2] She studied Chemistry in Halle (Saale) and Munich.[2] She completed her doctorate in 1938.[2] In 1944, she finished her habilitation at the University of Halle.[2] In 1946, she started as a lecturer for inorganic chemistry at the Heidelberg University.[2] Due to the destruction after the second world war, she had to write her first lecture notes based on her memory and test experiments in the chemistry laboratory.[2] In 1947, she became an extraordinary professor.[2] In 1959, the full professorship followed.[2] She was the first female rector of a university in West Germany from 1966 to 1969.[2][3] She helped initiating BAFöG during that time.[3] In 1969, she became the director of the Gmelin Institute for Inorganic Chemistry of the Max Planck Society in Frankfurt.[2] She stayed its director until her retirement in 1979.[2] She was married to Dr. Friedrich Becke.[2]

Research

Initially publishing under the name Goehring and later Becke-Goehring, she researched the chemistry of the main-group elements, especially phosphorus-nitrogen and sulfur-nitrogen compounds.[4] Her work on tetrasulfur tetranitride (S4N4) started decades of research on this unusual and highly reactive inorganic heterocycle.[5] She was also able to determine the structure and chemistry of poly(sulfur nitride) which later turned out to be the first non-metallic superconductor.[6][7][8] She discovered various new compounds, e.g. heptasulfur imide (S7NH),[9] phosphorus nitride chlorides (e.g. P3NCl12), [10][11][12] K2(C2N10S6) · 2 KSCN,[13] S3N4P(C6H5)3, [13] SN3P2O2CI4CH3,[14] N3P2Cl6B(CH3)2,[15] ClSO2NHSO2Cl,[16] Cl6NO4PS2,[17] Cl8IP,[17] S15N2,[18] S16N2,[18] S3N3Cl3O,[19] phosphorus hydrazine compounds,[20] PbAs4S6,[21] HgAs4S6,[21] PNS2O5Cl4.[22]

Recognition

She received the Alfred Stock Memorial Prize in 1961.[24][4] She was a member of the Academy of Sciences Leopoldina[25], of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences and Humanities[26], and of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences and Humanities.[27] She received a honorary doctorate from the University of Stuttgart[28] and she was awarded the Gmelin-Beilsteil Memorial Coin.[28] In 2017, the Heidelberg University started a lecture series in her remembrance.[29]
