Marie Jeanette de Lange (20 December 1865 – 7 July 1923) was a Dutch amateur painter and women's clothing activist. She appeared in a pointillist portrait by Jan Toorop in reformed clothing in 1900.

Life

de Lange was born in Batavia in the Dutch East Indies in 1865. Her father was an engineer working for a mapping company. She married in 1884. Her husband was involved in government finance and they moved to The Hague where he worked in the Dutch Finance department.[1] Her married name was van Boumann.[1]

In 1900 her portrait was painted by her friend and fellow painter Jan Toorop in the neo impressionist style. He was also born in Indonesia. It is speculated that they met in 1898 when there was an exhibition of women's work. de Lange was an art patron involved with women's rights and Toorop designed the event's poster.[2]

de Lange was a member of an organisation known as {{ill|Vereeniging voor Verbetering van Vrouwenkleeding|nl}} (aka "V.v.V.v.V") which was a Dutch group aiming to reform women's clothing formed in 1899.[3] The 1900 novel portrait was made whilst she was not wearing restrictive clothing and it was in the style of Pointillism.[4] In 1902 there was a split between those who wanted to concentrate on the working woman and those who thought that reform was mainly required for those who spent some funds on fashionable but restrictive clothing. The latter group was centred at The Hague and de Lange was their chairperson. de Lange's approach could be seen as a more sensible continuation of fashion and she created a magazine to advocate for their views.[3]

Lange died in Wapenveld in 1923.
