Wilson started her post secondary schooling by graduating with a BA degree in Geology from University of Oxford in 1973. Her education continued at the University of California, Berkeley in 1974 for a master's degree and concluded in 1976 with a PhD in Geology from the University of Leeds. Following her graduation Wilson was granted a fellowship to research with the NERC (Natural Environment Research Council). Wilson finished the fellowship in 1978 and continued with the NERC Council later on. In 2013, Wilson was given a faculty position at the University of Leeds.{{citation needed|date=June 2018}} Selected works
