Taxonomy and etymologyIt was described as a new species in 2006.[2] The holotype was collected in Marovaza, Madagascar, which inspired its species name.[1] DescriptionIt is relatively small for its genus.[2] Its forearm is approximately {{cvt|43.5|mm|in}} long.[3] Biology and ecologyIt has been found roosting in the palm-leave thatching of small huts. It roosts singly or in small colonies of up to five individuals.[1] It navigates and locates prey via echolocation; its calls have a frequency of maximum energy of 43.8–48 kHz and a maximum frequency of 58–72.6 kHz. Echolocation pulses last 6–8 seconds.[3] Individuals can be infected with Leptospira.[4] Range and habitatThe Marovaza house bat is endemic to western Madagascar. It is currently known from lowland areas of {{cvt|5-200|m|ft}} above sea level.[1] ConservationAs of 2017, it is evaluated as a least-concern species by the IUCN. It met the criteria for this classification because of its relatively large geographic range and its ability to tolerate some habitat destruction.[1] References1. ^1 2 3 4 {{cite journal| last1=Monadjem| first1= A.| last2= Cardiff| first2= S.G.| last3= Rakotoarivelo| first3= A.R.| last4= Jenkins| first4= R.K.B.| last5= Ratrimomanarivo| first5= F.H.| year= 2017| title= Scotophilus marovaza| journal= The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species| volume= 2017| page= e.T136774A22034361| doi= 10.2305/IUCN.UK.2017-2.RLTS.T136774A22034361.en}} {{Vespertilioninae nav}}{{taxonbar|from=Q2561104}}2. ^1 {{cite journal|doi=10.3161/1733-5329(2006)8[21:ANSOSC]2.0.CO;2|year=2006|volume=8|pages=21–37|title=A new species of Scotophilus (Chiroptera: Vespertilionidae) from western Madagascar|journal=Acta Chiropterologica|last1=Goodman|first1=Steven M|last2=Ratrimomanarivo|first2=Fanja H|last3=Randrianandrianina|first3=Félicien H}} 3. ^1 {{cite journal|doi=10.3161/150811009X485602|title=Forest Bats of Madagascar: Results of Acoustic Surveys|journal=Acta Chiropterologica|volume=11|issue=2|pages=375–392|year=2009|last1=Kofoky|first1=Amyot F|last2=Randrianandrianina|first2=Felicien|last3=Russ|first3=Jon|last4=Raharinantenaina|first4=Irma|last5=Cardiff|first5=Scott G|last6=Jenkins|first6=Richard K.
