Biography

María Obligado grew up in a very stimulating family environment, which she shared with her brother, the famous poet Rafael Obligado (1851-1920). She studied in Buenos Aires with the Italian professor Giuseppe Agujari, who was also the teacher of other young people of the high society with artistic inclinations.[3]

Like other Argentine artists of this period, María Obligado went to Paris to deepen her artistic training and her knowledge of the history of art. After marrying the writer Francisco Soto y Calvo, he embarked on a long journey of formation and transformation. The couple would live between Argentina and Europe from 1888 to 1910.[4]

Work

Like other contemporary women artists, María Obligado tackled a great diversity of artistic genres. Despite being remembered mainly for her many landscapes, he also made portraits, genre and historical scenes, paintings of animals and still life. She also addressed the self-portrait, and was one of the few examples of self-representation of the artists of the Ateneo.[5]

Her most important work, in terms of execution and meaning, was La Hierra, presented in Paris in 1909. The work received attention from the European press and was proposed to be exhibited at the International Art Exhibition in Buenos Aires as it exalted the values of the field in large format (321 x 443 cm). However, La Hierra is not exhibited in a prominent place in any museum as a programmatic work of the Centennial, but is in the dining room of the Cultural Institute "Martín Fierro" in Rosario, in a state of disastrous conservation, after decades of carelessness.[6]
