He has been an MLA for East Londonderry since the 2016 election. He removed his Twitter account on 03/04/18 following his retweet of a tweet stating Sadiq Khan was "The enemy within".{{cn|date=September 2018}} His party colleague Ian Paisley had to apologize on the same day for a similar anti-Muslim tweet.
