It is named after the African American Jazz drummer Max Roach, who visited the park in 1986.[1] In 1986, Lambeth Labour Party councillor Sharon Atkin persuaded the council to name 27 sites in the borough "to acknowledge contributions by people of African descent." Other streets were renamed after Francis Barber, a Jamaican manservant of Dr Johnson with ties to Streatham, and Olympic javelin champion Tessa Sanderson. Other places were named after musical figures like Roach, gospel singer Mahalia Jackson, and Jamaican saxophonists Joe Harriott and Harold McNair. The opening of Max Roach Park was timed to coincide with Roach's GLC-sponsored visit to London, and he attended its opening along with Councillor Atkin and the drummer Ken Gordon, uncle of Moira Stuart.[2] The park includes a One O'Clock Club and children's playground, which have been under threat from funding cuts.[3][4][5] Demonstrations against cuts to youth services began in 2011[6], but Lambeth Council says it is trying to find a way to maintain some level of service despite budget cuts.[7] References1. ^{{Cite news|url=http://www.brixtonbuzz.com/2018/05/in-photos-max-roach-park-a-brixton-green-space-named-after-an-american-jazz-drummer/|title=In photos: Max Roach Park – a Brixton green space named after an American jazz drummer|date=2018-05-17|work=Brixton Buzz news, features and listings for Brixton, London|access-date=2018-05-17|language=en-US}} {{LB Lambeth}}{{Parks and open spaces in London}}2. ^{{Cite web|url=https://www.theguardian.com/news/2007/sep/08/guardianobituaries.obituaries|title=Letter: Max Roach|date=2007-09-07|website=the Guardian|language=en|access-date=2018-05-17}} 3. ^{{Cite news|url=http://www.brixtonblog.com/one-oclock-clubs-are-a-godsend-for-parents-dont-cut-them/43367|title=One o’clock clubs are a godsend for parents, don’t cut them|date=2017-03-17|work=Brixton Blog|access-date=2018-05-17|language=en-GB}} 4. ^{{Cite news|url=http://www.brixtonbuzz.com/2016/10/dexters-and-max-roach-adventure-playground-closures-lambeth-council-responds/|title=Dexter’s and Max Roach adventure playground closures: Lambeth Council responds|date=2016-10-07|work=Brixton Buzz news, features and listings for Brixton, London|access-date=2018-05-17|language=en-US}} 5. ^{{Cite web|url=https://www.londonnewsonline.co.uk/popular-childrens-playground-faces-closure-as-council-pulls-funds/|title=Popular children’s playground faces closure as council pulls funds|last=Strong|first=Charlie|date=2017-10-20|website=www.londonnewsonline.co.uk|archive-url=|archive-date=|dead-url=|access-date=}} 6. ^{{Cite web|url=http://www.yourlocalguardian.co.uk/news/9363555.display/|title=Demonstrators march against cuts to youth services|website=Your Local Guardian|language=en|access-date=2018-05-17}} 7. ^{{Cite news|url=http://www.brixtonblog.com/council-will-find-ways-to-keep-one-oclock-clubs-open-despite-cuts/43371|title=Council says it will find ways to keep one o’clock clubs open despite cuts|date=2017-03-17|work=Brixton Blog|access-date=2018-05-17|language=en-GB}} 2 : Parks and open spaces in the London Borough of Lambeth|Brixton |
