The Media Fellowship House is a non-partisan interracial and interfaith organization in Media, Pennsylvania. The house has been used to hold programs for children and senior citizens, and also host civics groups and civil rights activities.[1][2] HistoryThe idea for the Fellowship House began when two white women, Dorothy James and Julia Fowler witnessed a waitress in a restaurant refuse service to three African Americans, Marie Whitaker and her daughter and Edna Best.[3][4] All of the women left the restaurant together and ate in another place.[3][5] James and Fowler decided to create an interracial fellowship.[3] They founded the house in 1944,[6] in a room over a two car garage.[7] They used that room for nine years.[7] In 1953, they obtained a new, larger building and in 1955 built a new wing using money from the memorial fund for Ellen Starr Brinton.[6] The Fellowship home almost disbanded in 1970, but the board chose to continue its mission.[8] References1. ^{{Cite news|url=https://www.newspapers.com/clip/13275994/|title=Tolerance Fostered at Fellowship House|last=Huff|first=Clare|date=4 April 1965|work=The Philadelphia Inquirer|access-date=22 August 2017|archive-url=|archive-date=|dead-url=|via=Newspapers.com}} 2. ^{{Cite journal|last=|first=|date=April 1970|title=Freedom News|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=PQoWfDfILdsC&lpg=PA165&dq=%22media%20fellowship%20house%22&pg=PA165#v=onepage&q=%22media%20fellowship%20house%22&f=false|journal=The Crisis|volume=77|issue=4|pages=165|via=}} 3. ^1 2 {{Cite news|url=http://www.delconewsnetwork.com/mediatowntalk/news/media-fellowship-house-marks-th-anniversary-with-minutes-anchor-bill/article_fc67f516-440c-5123-99e4-5506c75d7fcb.html|title=Media Fellowship House marks 70th Anniversary with ’60 Minutes’ Anchor Bill Whitaker|last=Serbin|first=Susan L.|date=28 October 2014|work=Delco News Network|access-date=2017-08-22|archive-url=|archive-date=|dead-url=|language=en}} 4. ^{{Cite news|url=https://www.newspapers.com/clip/13275725/|title=Media Fellowship House -- An Experiment in Human Relations|last=|first=|date=25 April 1959|work=Delaware County Daily Times|access-date=22 August 2017|archive-url=|archive-date=|dead-url=|via=Newspapers.com}} 5. ^{{Cite web|url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v8fEcedNUg8|title=Talk Philly: Media Fellowship House|last=|first=|date=14 October 2014|website=CBS Philly|type=video|archive-url=|archive-date=|dead-url=|access-date=22 August 2017}} 6. ^1 {{Cite news|url=https://www.newspapers.com/clip/13274753/|title=Racial Incident Spawns Unique Institution|last=Grasberger|first=Sara M.|date=26 November 1964|work=Delaware County Daily Times|access-date=22 August 2017|archive-url=|archive-date=|dead-url=|via=Newspapers.com}} 7. ^1 {{Cite news|url=https://www.newspapers.com/clip/13275855/|title=Media Fellowship House Builds Tolerant Climate|last=Huff|first=Claire|date=4 April 1965|work=The Philadelphia Inquirer|access-date=22 August 2017|archive-url=|archive-date=|dead-url=|via=Newspapers.com}} 8. ^{{Cite news|url=https://www.newspapers.com/clip/13277309/|title=Fellowship House Will Remain Open Despite Proposals to Disband|last=|first=|date=30 April 1970|work=The Philadelphia Inquirer|access-date=22 August 2017|archive-url=|archive-date=|dead-url=|via=Newspapers.com}} External links
