Early life and educationMoyer graduated from St. Paul's School, Concord, New Hampshire in 1997. At the University of Michigan she received a Bachelor of Science in molecular biology and a Bachelor of Music. With a science education, she worked at a bio tech company before deciding to switch careers and become a science writer. In 2006 she received a master's degree in Science, Health and Environmmental Reporting (SHERP) from New York University.[2] CareerEarly in her career, she worked briefly as an editor, and then became a freelance journalist. Her early features were for institutional publications, particularly in Pitt Med, of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Clips from these writings were used to showcase her talent, and this opened the doors to more prestigious journals. She now avoids non-journalistic work entirely; without any clear guidelines, the possibility of conflicts of interest from working for institutional publications may lead to ethical situations difficult to navigate.[3] After a "fat pitch"[4] to Slate, Moyer became a frequent contributor. She is now the science-based parenting columnist, and has written over 100 articles for Slate.[5] Other publications have included Nature, Discover, Popular Science[6] and, Self, among others.[7] As of March, 2018, she is a visiting scholar at New York University.[8] She had previously been an adjunct assistant professor of journalism at the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism.[9] She is an Alicia Patterson Foundation Fellow.[10] The Kavanaugh hearings for the U.S. Supreme Court led her to review and write about the long-term effects of sexual assault on teenagers[11] Awards
Personal lifeShe married science journalist and deputy editor of Quanta Magazine[17] Michael Moyer in 2009.[18] They have two children.[19] References1. ^{{Cite web|url=https://www.quantamagazine.org/authors/melinda-wenner-moyer/|title=Melinda Wenner Moyer {{!}} Quanta Magazine|website=www.quantamagazine.org|access-date=2018-08-06}} {{authority control}}{{DEFAULTSORT:Moyer, Melinda Wenner}}2. ^{{Cite web|url=http://melindawennermoyer.com/rsum/|title=Résumé|website=MELINDA WENNER MOYER|language=en-US|access-date=2018-08-05}} 3. ^{{Cite news|url=https://www.theopennotebook.com/2018/02/27/navigating-conflicts-of-interest/|title=Navigating Conflicts of Interest|date=2018-02-27|work=The Open Notebook|access-date=2018-08-06|language=en-US}} 4. ^{{Cite web|url=http://healthandscience.journalism.cuny.edu/science-journalism-fall-2017/|title=Science Journalism (Fall 2017)|website=healthandscience.journalism.cuny.edu|language=en-US|access-date=2018-08-06}} 5. ^{{Cite web|url=http://www.slate.com/authors.melinda_wenner_moyer.html|title=Melinda Wenner Moyer|website=Slate Magazine|access-date=2018-08-06}} 6. ^{{Cite news|url=https://www.popsci.com/popsci-authors/melinda-wenner|title=Melinda Wenner Moyer|work=Popular Science|access-date=2018-08-07|language=en}} 7. ^{{Cite web|url=https://sciencewritersmeeting.org/2013/speakers/melinda-wenner-moyer.html|title=Melinda Wenner Moyer {{!}} ScienceWriters|website=sciencewritersmeeting.org|language=en|access-date=2018-08-06}} 8. ^1 {{Cite news|url=https://journalism.nyu.edu/about-us/profile/melinda-wenner-moyer/|title=Melinda Wenner Moyer - NYU Journalism|work=NYU Journalism|access-date=2018-08-06|language=en-US}} 9. ^{{Cite web|url=https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Melinda_Wenner_Moyer|title=Profile Melinda Wenner Moyer|last=|first=|date=|website=researchgate.net|archive-url=|archive-date=|dead-url=|access-date=}} 10. ^{{Cite web|url=http://mail.aliciapatterson.org/fellows?field_year_value=2018|title=Fellows {{!}} Alicia Patterson Foundation|website=mail.aliciapatterson.org|language=en|access-date=2018-08-06}} 11. ^{{Cite news|url=https://www.thecut.com/2018/09/the-lingering-psychological-scars-of-teen-sexual-trauma.html|title=The Lingering Psychological Scars of Teen Sexual Assault|last=Moyer|first=Melinda Wenner|work=The Cut|access-date=2018-10-08|language=en}} 12. ^1 {{Cite web|url=https://asja.org/For-Writers/Annual-Writing-Awards|title=American Society of Journalists and Authors|website=asja.org|language=en-US|access-date=2018-08-06}} 13. ^{{Cite web|url=https://www.asha.org/About/news/Press-Releases/2017/ASHA-Names-2017-Media-Award-Winners/|title=ASHA Names 2017 Media Award Winners|website=www.asha.org|language=en|access-date=2018-08-06}} 14. ^{{Cite journal|last=Moyer|first=Melinda Wenner|date=2016-11-15|title=The Looming Threat of Factory Superbugs|url=https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/how-drug-resistant-bacteria-travel-from-the-farm-to-your-table/|journal=Scientific American|language=en|volume=315|issue=6|pages=70–79|doi=10.1038/scientificamerican1216-70|issn=0036-8733}} 15. ^{{Cite news|url=https://www.foliomag.com/2017-folio-eddie-award-winners/11/|title=2017 Folio: Eddie Award Winners - Page 11 of 14 - Folio:|work=Folio:|access-date=2018-08-07|language=en-US}} 16. ^{{Cite news|url=http://newsroom.acep.org/journalism_awards?item=30014|title=Award Winners - 2010|work=American College of Emergency Physicians {{!}} News Room|access-date=2018-08-06|language=en}} 17. ^{{Cite web|url=https://muckrack.com/mmoyr|title=Michael Moyer {{!}} Quanta Magazine Journalist {{!}} Muck Rack|website=muckrack.com|language=en|access-date=2018-08-16}} 18. ^{{Cite web|url=https://www.travelersjoy.com/0000015492|title=Michael Moyer & Melinda Wenner registered their honeymoon at Traveler's Joy.
