}}Melissa Anne Perry is an Australian lawyer and a Judge of the Federal Court of Australia. Perry was appointed to the Federal Court in September 2013.[3]

Early Life and education

Perry's father was The Hon. John Perry {{post-nominals|country=AUS|AO,|QC}}, a South Australian lawyer who would later be appointed a judge of the Supreme Court of South Australia. while her mother Jennifer would later be appointed a lay member of the Mental Health Review Tribunal in South Australia. Perry attended Walford Anglican School for Girls and was Dux of the school in 1980.[2]

Perry studied at the University of Adelaide where she graduated with a Bachelor of Laws with Honours in 1985.[4] Perry then studied at the University of Cambridge where she graduated with a Master of Law and was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy in 1995. Perry received the Yorke Prize for her PhD dissertation on State Succession and boundaries.[5]

Career

Perry became a barrister in 1992 at Bar Chambers in Adelaide. She was appointed a Queens Counsel in 2004. Perry moved to Sydney in 2004 and joined Selbourne Chambers. Perry was involved in numerous native title cases, including Waanyi People v Queensland.,[6] Wik Peoples v Queensland,[7] Yarmirr v Northern Territory,[8] Western Australia v Ward,[9] Yorta Yorta v Victoria,[10] and Jango v Northern Territory.[11]
