The engine is a {{convert|1950|cc|L|1|order=flip}} turbo-diesel cast aluminum block in line four-cylinder with balancing shafts.[3] It has a single turbo and cylinder walls are lined with slippery Nanoslide, an iron-carbon coating that cuts friction. In the 220-configuration it produces {{convert|143|kW|PS hp|0|abbr=on}} at 3,800 rpm with peak torque of {{convert|400|Nm|0|abbr=on}} at 1,600-2,400 rpm. The engine weight is {{convert|168.4|kg|lb|abbr=on}} (a 17% improvement over the {{convert|202.8|kg|lb|abbr=on}} of the previous {{convert|2143|cc|L|1|order=flip}} OM651).[4][5] Also, the engine consumes 13% less fuel than its predecessor.
