Merisa, merissa or marissa is a traditional fermented beverage popular in South Sudan. It is made by Sudanese women as a source of income.[1] Merisa is made by brewing dates, millet and sorghum. The brewing process has been described as complex by Western beer making standards with over a dozen steps.[2] Merisa has an 8-10 hour fermentation process and has an alcohol content of up to 6%.[3] It is illegal to drink or sell Marissa in Northern Sudan under Muslim Sharia laws, under penalty of 40 lashes, fines and imprisonment.[4] Baboons in Sudan are known to drink merisa when offered.[5] References1. ^{{cite web|url=http://letsmeetonearth.org/south-sudan-malakal-article/ |title=South Sudan - Malakal - The article - Let's meet on earth |website=Letsmeetonearth.org |date= |accessdate=2017-04-26}} {{drink-stub}}{{SouthSudan-stub}}2. ^{{cite web|url=http://popups.ulg.ac.be/1780-4507/index.php?id=9217 |title=Characteristics of African traditional beers brewed with sorghum malt: a review | Université de Liège |website=Popups.ulg.ac.be |date= |accessdate=2017-04-26}} 3. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.who.int/substance_abuse/publications/en/sudan.pdf |title=Microsoft Word - sudan.doc |website=Who.int |format=PDF |date= |accessdate=2017-04-26}} 4. ^{{cite web|author=Rebecca Hamilton |url=http://pulitzercenter.org/reporting/doesnt-look-unity |title=South Sudanese Harassed Brewing Traditional Drink |publisher=Pulitzer Center |date=2010-10-12 |accessdate=2017-04-26}} 5. ^{{cite book|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=BZhFAQAAMAAJ&pg=RA1-PA85&dq=merisa%20drink&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiXsOrfgsHTAhUnl1QKHRpbDYwQ6AEIJzAA#v=onepage&q=merisa%20drink&f=true |title=Our Day |page=85 |website=Books.google.com |date= |accessdate=2017-04-26}} 3 : Sudanese cuisine|Fermented drinks|Alcoholic drinks |
