Opened in 1970, the mall features four anchor stores: J. C. Penney, Dillard's, Macy's, and Sears. HistoryThe mall opened in 1970 and is the oldest mall in Brevard County, Florida.[3] Its original anchor stores were Jordan Marsh (later Burdines, now Macy's), Ivey's (now Dillard's), and J. C. Penney.[3] It remained unchanged until 1985, when a renovation plan was announced which would add {{convert|60000|sqft|m2}} of retail space.[4] Also part of this expansion was a fourth department store, Sears, which opened in 1989 and replaced an existing store in Rockledge.[5] Sports Authority joined the mall in 2013, but closed in 2016 when the chain filed for bankruptcy.[6]In 2016, the mall was foreclosed on and auctioned on while under the ownership of WP Glimcher.[7] The mall had no bidders.[8] References1. ^{{cite news|url=https://www.newspapers.com/image/125343931/|title=Brevard's new Merritt Square to be Central Florida's largest|date=July 9, 1970|work=Florida Today|page=11E|accessdate=4 May 2017}} 2. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.woodmont.com/collateral/DA3526C6-1BFF-402A-93E8-4F37E6E923B5.pdf|title=Merritt Square Mall|work=woodmont.com|accessdate=May 4, 2017}} 3. ^{{cite web|url=http://articles.orlandosentinel.com/1986-08-03/news/0240210019_1_square-mall-merritt-square-brevard|title=Changes In Store For 1st Mall Merritt Square Renovations Include New Pavilion, Offices, Shops|last=Hinman|first=Catherine|date=August 3, 1986|work=Orlando Sentinel|accessdate=May 4, 2017}} 4. ^{{cite web|url=http://articles.orlandosentinel.com/1985-10-11/business/0330390000_1_merritt-square-mall-melbourne-square-square-feet|title=Merritt Square Mall Will Get $3.2 Million Facelift|last=Adams|first=Peter|date=October 11, 1985|work=Orlando Sentinel|accessdate=May 4, 2017}} 5. ^{{cite web|url=http://articles.orlandosentinel.com/1987-04-29/business/0120400007_1_merritt-square-sears-roebuck-merritt-island|title=Merritt Island Mall Will Get New Sears|last=Hinman|first=Catherine|date=April 29, 1987|work=Orlando Sentinel|accessdate=May 4, 2017}} 6. ^{{cite web|url=http://spacecoastdaily.com/2016/05/sports-authority-will-now-close-all-stores-including-in-melbourne-and-merritt-island/|title=Sports Authority Will Close All Stores, Including In Melbourne, Viera and Merritt Island|date=May 1, 2016|work=Space Coast Daily|accessdate=May 4, 2017}} 7. ^1 {{cite web|url=http://www.floridatoday.com/story/money/2016/05/17/merritt-square-mall-foreclosure/84446124/|title=Merritt Square Mall in foreclosure, to be auctioned|last=Price|first=Wayne T.|date=May 17, 2016|work=Florida Today|accessdate=May 4, 2017}} 8. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.floridatoday.com/story/news/2016/05/25/merritt-square-mall-foreclosure/84899124/|title=Merritt Square gets new owner - for now|last=Price|first=Wayne T.|date=May 25, 2016|work=Florida Today|accessdate=May 4, 2017}} External links
