It is known from North, Central and South America. There are about 140 described species in Metachroma, 40 of which are found north of Mexico.[1][2][3][4][5] An extinct species is also known from the Eocene of the United States. The generic name comes from the Ancient Greek {{wikt-lang|grc|μετα-|μετα}} ("different") and {{wikt-lang|grc|χρῶμα}} ("color"), referring to the variations in color pattern found within many of the species.[5] Species{{columns-list|colwidth=25em|
