It is held every year on 9 August, the eve of St Lawrence's Day, and consists mainly in planting a beech at the intersection of {{lang|fr|rue des Sables}}/{{lang|nl|Zandstraat}} and {{lang|fr|rue du Marais}}/{{lang|nl|Broekstraat}}. The celebration is reminiscent of a victory of Brussels over the city of Leuven in 1213. To respect the tradition, the tree of joy must imperatively be planted before 5 pm. It is accompanied by processions and various folk activities during the day.[1] Since 2008, the Meyboom has been recognised as an expression of intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO, as part of the binational inscription 'Processional giants and dragons in Belgium and France'.[2] CelebrationsThe tree is designated by the city's Plantation Department and "chosen" by the Companions of St Lawrence in the Sonian Forest, in the outskirts of Brussels. According to tradition, it must weigh at least {{convert|600|kg|abbr=on}}, measure between {{convert|12-13|m|abbr=on}} and be leafy. It is cut and then transported by Bûûmdroegers ("tree bearers"), through the municipalities of Schaerbeek, Saint-Josse-ten-Noode and the City of Brussels. At 1 pm, a tribute is paid to the deceased Companions. The procession then forms at the corner of {{lang|fr|rue du Marais}}/{{lang|nl|Broekstraat}} and {{lang|fr|rue des Comédiens}}/{{lang|nl|Komediantenstraat}} (near the local brotherhood of the Companions, at No. 37 {{lang|fr|rue des Sables}}/{{lang|nl|Zandstraat}}), and sets off along a fixed route: {{lang|fr|rue du Fossé aux Loups}}/{{lang|nl|Wolvengracht}}, {{lang|fr|Place de la Monnaie}}/{{lang|nl|Muntplein}}, {{lang|fr|rue des Fripiers}}/{{lang|nl|Kleerkopersstraat}}, {{lang|fr|rue de Tabora}}/{{lang|nl|Taborastraat}}, {{lang|fr|rue du Midi}}/{{lang|nl|Zuidstraat}}, {{lang|fr|rue du Lombard}}/{{lang|nl|Lombardstraat}}, {{lang|fr|rue de l'Étuve}}/{{lang|nl|Stoofstraat}}, {{lang|fr|rue de l'Amigo}}/{{lang|nl|Vruntstraat}} and the Grand Place. At 2:45 pm, the procession returns from the Grand Place via {{lang|fr|rue Chair et Pain}}/{{lang|nl|Vlees-en-Broodstraat}}, {{lang|fr|rue du Marché aux Herbes}}/{{lang|nl|Grasmarkt}}, {{lang|fr|rue de la Fourche}}/{{lang|nl|Greepstraat}}, {{lang|fr|rue de l’Écuyer}}/{{lang|nl|Schildknaapsstraat}}, {{lang|fr|rue Montagne aux Herbes Potagères}}/{{lang|nl|Warmoesberg}}, and finally returns to the corner of {{lang|fr|rue des Comédiens}}/{{lang|nl|Komediantenstraat}} and {{lang|fr|rue du Marais}}/{{lang|nl|Broekstraat}} around 4:30 pm. Along the way, small branches of the tree are distributed, supposed to bring happiness for the year to come. The culmination is the plantation itself, which must take place before 5 pm. The tree is in fact not really planted but stuck in the ground and removed the next day.
