Early life and educationDonkor was born in London to a Ghanaian household.[1] He completed his bachelor's degree in English at Wadham College, Oxford, as well as a Master's in Creative Writing at University of London.[2] At the University of Oxford he was one of only 21 black students in his year.[3] At the University of London he was supervised by Andrew Motion.[2] CareerIn 2010 Donkor trained as an English teacher at the UCL Institute of Education, and taught sixth form students at St Paul's Girls' School.[1][2] In 2014 he was chosen by the National Centre for Writing for their mentoring program, through which he met mentor Daniel Hahn and agent Juliet Pickering.[1] He was described by HarperCollins as a "powerful new British literary voice". The Observer selected him as a New Face of Fiction in January 2018.[4][5] He is inspired by Zadie Smith, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and Toni Morrison.[5] HoldFourth Estate gained publishing rights to Donkor's Hold, which was published in July 2018.[6][7][8][9] It follows the stories of three teenage girls from Kumasi, Ghana to Brixton in 2002, and has been described as a coming-of-age novel.[10][5] Donkor chose to set it Hold in 2002 as it marks the summer he was applying to study English at university.[5] Hold has been longlisted for the 2019 Dylan Thomas Prize.[11]References1. ^1 2 {{Cite web|url=http://blakefriedmann.co.uk/michael-donkor/|title=Michael Donkor|website=Blake Friedmann|language=en-GB|access-date=2018-07-07}} 2. ^1 2 {{Cite news|url=http://poetscornertutors.com/michael-donkor-poets-corner-tutors/|title=Michael Donkor – Poets' Corner Tutors|work=Poets' Corner Tutors|access-date=2018-07-07|language=en-GB}} 3. ^{{Cite web|url=https://www.theguardian.com/education/2018/jul/07/how-survive-as-black-man-at-oxford-university-michael-donkor|title='My blackness seemed curious, difficult to handle': the day I ran away from Oxford University|last=Donkor|first=Michael|date=2018-07-07|website=the Guardian|language=en|access-date=2018-07-07}} 4. ^{{Cite web|url=https://www.theguardian.com/books/2018/jan/14/debut-novelists-2018-donkor-halliday-gowar-bracht-kitson-libby-page-aj-pearce|title=Meet the new faces of fiction for 2018|last=O'Kelly|first=Lisa|last2=Beckerman|first2=Hannah|date=2018-01-14|website=the Guardian|language=en|access-date=2018-07-07|last3=Lewis|first3=Tim|last4=Armitstead|first4=Claire|last5=Kellaway|first5=Kate|last6=Skidelsky|first6=William|last7=Akbar|first7=Arifa|last8=Clark|first8=Alex}} 5. ^1 2 3 {{Cite web|url=https://www.thebookseller.com/insight/michael-donkor-773326|title=Michael Donkor {{!}} 'Ghanaians have a really silly and often quite absurd sense of humour' |website= The Bookseller |access-date=2018-07-07}} 6. ^{{Cite news|url=http://www.brixtonbuzz.com/2018/05/brixton-rising-new-voices-in-fiction-brixton-library-tonight-weds-16th-may-7pm/|title=Brixton Rising: New Voices in Fiction, Brixton Library tonight, Weds 16th May, 7pm|date=2018-05-16|work=Brixton Buzz news, features and listings for Brixton, London|access-date=2018-07-07|language=en-US}} 7. ^{{Cite web|url=https://www.thebookseller.com/news/fourth-estate-wins-debut-novel-teacher-auction-598781|title=Fourth Estate wins teacher's debut novel at auction |website=The Bookseller |access-date=2018-07-07}} 8. ^{{Cite news|url=https://www.thebookbanque.com/literary/2018-anticipated-reads|title=2018: Most Anticipated Reads|work=The Book Banque|access-date=2018-07-07|language=en-US}} 9. ^{{Cite news|url=https://nigeriainfo.fm/anticipated-african-books-read-2018/|title=The Most Anticipated African Books To Read In 2018 - Nigeria Info|date=2018-01-12|work=Nigeria Info|access-date=2018-07-07|language=en-US}} 10. ^{{Cite news|url=https://www.harpercollins.co.uk/9780008280345/hold|title=Hold by Michael Donkor - Hardcover |publisher=HarperCollins UK|access-date=2018-07-07}} 11. ^{{Cite news|url=https://www.theguardian.com/books/2019/jan/31/dylan-thomas-prize-sally-rooney-michael-donkor-nana-kwame-adjei-brenyah-sarah-perry|title=Dylan Thomas prize: teacher and nurse among 'starburst' of young talent|last=Flood|first=Alison|date=2019-01-31|work=The Guardian|access-date=2019-02-04|language=en-GB|issn=0261-3077}} External links
