It serves the southern Newcastle suburb of Adamstown, opening on 15 August 1887.[2] As part of the electrification of the line in the early 1980s, new station buildings were built, the western relief line and Platform 3 removed, and the 1939 built signal box on Platform 1 that used to control movements to the Belmont line decommissioned on 4 December 1983.[3][4] Until December 1991, the Belmont line diverged to the south-east of the station. The station was upgraded with new lifts and footbridge with work completed by late 2017.[5] Platforms and servicesAdamstown has two platforms plus a third disused. It is serviced by NSW TrainLink Central Coast & Newcastle Line services travelling from Sydney Central to Newcastle.[6] {{Sydney Trains platform box|p1linename = Central Coast & Newcastle Line |p1stop = services to Gosford & Sydney Central |p1notes = [6] |p2linename = Central Coast & Newcastle Line |p2stop = services to Newcastle |p2notes = [6]}} Track layout{{Routemap|navbar = Adamstown Station |title = Track layout |title-color = white |title-bg = #{{NSW TrainLink color|NTL}} |legend = track |map = d\\\\vCONTgfa\\ ~~To Kotara d\\\\vSTR!~ev-ABZg2\\exSTRc3 exCONTgq-\\exSTR2+r-\\vSTR!~exSTRc3!~exSTRc1\\exv-STR+4\\d ~~<-- To Belmont Line \\exSTRc1\\vÜSTl!~evABZg+4-\\d\\exvSTR- \\v-BS\\vSTR\\dBS\\exvSTR- \\v-BS!~d*1__align=r\\vSTR\\dBS!~d*2__align=l\\exvSTR-!~d*3__align=l \\v-BS\\vSTR\\dBS\\exvSTR- \\\\\\vBUE\\d\\xvBUE-\\ ~~St James Road \\\\\\vÜSTl\\d\\vENDEa-\\ \\\\d\\vSTR-ABZgl\\v-STR+r!~v-STR\\ \\\\vCONTgfe\\v-CONTf\\d ~~To Broadmeadow }} Transport linksNewcastle Transport operates one route via Adamstown station:
