The townland lies west of the River Shannon, the border between the provinces of Connacht and Leinster but is part of County Roscommon. The area has experienced rapid growth in recent years, developing from a cluster of housing estates on the outskirts of Athlone into a small town in its own right. This is largely due to the rapid growth of Athlone during the Celtic Tiger and with dozens of new housing developments springing up in the area and a growing population, services arrived with the construction of a supermarket and much retail space in a new business park. This complemented an already present industrial base in the area, the largest of which was Alkermes (formerly Elan) along with a number of smaller pharmaceutical companies. The area now has a full range of amenities with restaurants, gyms, cafes and a hotel among the many other retail services available.{{Citation needed|date=March 2019}} Monksland has grown to become the second-largest urban area in County Roscommon after Roscommon town.
