The track was released as the fourth single from the album on 22 January 2019. Composition and lyrics"Mother Tongue" has been described as a pop rock[2] and dance-pop song.[3] According to Jordan Fish, "Mother Tongue" is the spiritual successor of "Drown".[4] The track is a love song dedicated to Oliver Sykes' wife, Alissa Salls.[5] Fish said of the song: {{Quote|"Vocal-wise it's quite a big song. There's a little bit of Portuguese in there, which is quite unusual. It's kind of a big, anthemic song. It's probably as close as we get to something like "Drown" on this album.
