He was located in a secluded area around 4:20pm Central Time.[6] Police had tracked the vehicle to Anderson's family's cabin, which was unoccupied when they arrived.[8] When police located Anderson, he was standing knee-deep in a swamp behind the cabin with his wrists slashed. He eventually led them to Alayna's body, which was completely submerged under water. An autopsy found evidence of sexual assault, and determined the cause of death to be strangulation and blunt force trauma to the head.[9] On March 2nd, 2018, Zachary Todd Anderson pleaded guilty to a charge of first-degree murder while committing first-degree criminal sexual conduct. He received Minnesota's mandatory sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.[10] See also
