It is located {{convert|3.2|mi|km}} south-southwest of Buena Vista.[2] A {{convert|160|acre|ha}} property on Maxwell Creek was homesteaded by Charles Nachtrieb in 1876. It was expanded to {{convert|640|acre|ha}} by the early 1900s, and remained in the Nachtrieb family until 1936. The ranch has held grazing rights to a large area of adjacent public lands.
