}}Nadiem Makarim (born 1984) is an Indonesian entrepreneur, who founded Go-Jek in 2010, an transportation network company and logistic startup company which become Indonesia's first Unicorn Company.[1]

Personal Life

Nadiem was born in Jakarta, 4 april 1984, from Nono Anwar Makarim and Atika Algadri. His father, a lawyer, is an Arabian descendant Nadiem finished his high school at Jakarta and went to Brown University for a BA and then to Harvard University for an MBA. Both he and his father was alumnus of Harvard University. He married Franka Franklin and have one daughter .[2]

Career

Makarim started his career at Mckinsey & Company as management consultant in Jakarta. He left to co-found Zalora, an online fashion shop, and left Zalora to become Chief Innovation Officer at Kartuku, a payments service provider.

For his daily routine, Makarim often uses a motorcyle taxi, known in Indonesia as an Ojek. He saw this as a business opportunity developed it into Go-jek, founded in 2010 .[3][4]

Go-Jek was well received, and eventually received US$ 1,3 billion funding from investors, in a 2018 funding round led by Alphabet Inc's Google, JD.com Inc and Tencent Holdings; this made it the first Indonesian Unicorn Company.[5]. By 2019, the firm is worth up to US$ 10 billions.[6]

Honors

He received the Asian of the year award from The Straits Times in 2016, the first Indonesian person to receive the award.[7]
