Nadine B. Ramsey (1911-1997) was an American aviator who became one of the first two women to fly mail for the US Postal Service. She was a Women Airforce Service Pilot and one of only twenty-six WASPs to pilot a Lockheed P-38 Lightning during World War II. Ramsey was raised in Illinois and Kansas.[1] Her father committed suicide after being arrested for alleged spousal abuse.[1] After his death, Ramsey's mother raised her and her younger brother, Edwin, alone.[1] Ramsey's mother was a dermatologist, while her brother became an officer in the US Army and a guerrilla leader in the Philippines during World War II.[1] Ramsey became an aviator in 1937[2], making headlines when she flew a Kansas airmail route on May 19, 1938.[3] She and Charlotte Frye were the first women to carry mail for the Postal Service.[3] On May 22, she flew in an airshow in Hutchinson, Kansas.[4] By 1940,[5] Ramsey was living in Manhattan Beach, California, where she advertised and sold Taylorcraft airplanes.[6] She also carried passengers for a fee.[6] On September 2, 1940, Ramsey was flying over the mountains near Lake Henshaw with a passenger named Gertrude Snow.[5] As she tried to land, the plane's landing gear hit a tree, causing it to nosedive.[5] Snow received "fractures of both arms and a badly mangled leg".[5] Ramsey was treated for "possible serious internal injuries".[5] Ramsey joined the Women Airforce Service Pilots in 1943.[7] She graduated with the 43 W-5 Class[8] on September 12, 1943.[7] Ramsey went on to pursuit school, where she learned to fly fighter planes, graduating on May 1, 1944.[9] As a WASP, Ramsey piloted PT-19, BT-13, UC-78, AT-6, P-39, P-40, P-47, P-51, and P-63 planes.[8] She was also one of the twenty-six WASPs who flew a Lockheed P-38 Lightning.[10] Ramsey was initially stationed at Love Field, Texas, but asked to be transferred to the Long Beach Army Air Base in California,[2] where she ferried fighter aircraft and was an instructor in "preflight transition".[11]After the WASPs were disbanded, she stayed on the base as an attaché to the Sixth Army Ferrying Group.[11] References1. ^1 2 3 {{Cite news|url=https://www.latimes.com/local/obituaries/la-me-edwin-ramsey-20130317-story.html|title=Edwin Ramsey dies at 95; WWII Army cavalry officer in Philippines|last=Woo|first=Elaine|date=16 March 2013|work=LA Times|access-date=3 April 2019}} {{authority control}}{{DEFAULTSORT:Ramsey, Nadine B.}}2. ^1 {{Cite news|url=https://www.newspapers.com/clip/21365190/independent_presstelegram/|title=WASPs seek status|last=|first=|date=10 October 1976|work=Independent Press-Telegram|access-date=3 April 2019|via=newspapers.com}} 3. ^1 {{Cite news|url=https://www.newspapers.com/clip/13111060/1938_may_18_the_hutchinson_news/|title=Woman Pilots Mail Plane From Wichita|last=|first=|date=18 May 1938|work=The Hutchinson News|access-date=3 April 2019|via=newspapers.com}} 4. ^{{Cite news|url=https://www.newspapers.com/clip/6260119/1938_may_22_sunday_hutchinson_news/|title=Thirty Ships Expected In Air Show Today|last=|first=|date=22 May 1938|work=The Hutchinson News|access-date=3 April 2019|via=newspapers.com}} 5. ^1 2 3 4 {{Cite news|url=https://www.newspapers.com/clip/30237176/women_hurt_in_plane_crash/|title=Women Hurt|last=|first=|date=3 September 1940|work=Santa Maria Times|access-date=4 April 2019|via=newspapers.com}} 6. ^1 {{Cite book|title=Prop Wash: For The Love Of Flying|last=Kaseman|first=Betty|publisher=Black Forest Press|year=2005|isbn=1582751358|location=San Diego, California|pages=61-64}} 7. ^1 {{Cite news|url=https://www.newspapers.com/clip/13111097/1943_sept_12_big_spring_daily_herald/|title=Wives And Sisters Of Missing Men Go Into Air Service|last=|first=|date=12 September 1943|work=Big Spring Daily Herald|access-date=4 April 2019}} 8. ^1 {{Cite web|url=http://twudigital.contentdm.oclc.org/cdm/ref/collection/p214coll2/id/4296|title=Nadine Ramsey, 43-W-5 Classbook Photograph|last=|first=|date=2014|website=Texas Women's University|archive-url=|archive-date=|dead-url=|access-date=}} 9. ^{{Cite book|title=WASP of the Ferry Command: Women Pilots, Uncommon Deeds|last=Byrn Rickman|first=Sarah|publisher=University of North Texas Press|year=2016|isbn=|location=|pages=253}} 10. ^{{Cite book|title=The Few: Women Who Flew the P-38|last=Bledsoe|first=Larry W.|publisher=BOOKBABY|year=2017|isbn=|location=|pages=}} 11. ^1 {{Cite news|url=https://www.newspapers.com/clip/6259752/18_sept_1949_sunday_independent/|title=Women with Wings|last=Reece|first=Ruth|date=18 September 1949|work=Independent Press-Telegram|access-date=4 April 2019}} 5 : American female aviators|Aviators from Kansas|Women Airforce Service Pilots|1911 births|1997 deaths |
