Naika Foroutan ({{Lang-fa|نایکا فروتن}}; born 24 December 1971[1] in Boppard[2]) is a German social scientist.

Since 2011 she is head of the research group "Young Islam-related topics in Germany" (junited) at the Humboldt-Universität Berlin (HU); In June 2015, she was appointed professor of "Integration research and Social policy" by Humboldt-Universität.[3] In addition, she is secretary of the five-member board of the German Council for Migration;[4] Since 2017 also head of the "German Centre for Integration and Migration Research" (DeZIM).[5]

Since May 2018, Foroutan is the director of the "Berlin Institute for Empirical Integration and Migration research" (BIM) and is head of the "Integration research and social policy" working area.[6]

Life

Foroutan is the daughter of a German mother and an Iranian father. She is the sister of actress Melika Foroutan. Her father Bahman Foroutan is a football coach. He was from 2010 to 2014, coach of various amateur clubs in Berlin. Naika Foroutan lived for 11 years in Tehran and left Iran in 1983 together with her family.[7] Foroutan studied political science, romance Philology and Islamic Studies at the University of Cologne. In the years 2000 to 2004 she received a doctorate at the University of Göttingen at Bassam Tibi in the thematic area "inter-civilisation cultural dialogues between the West and the Islamic world" as a result, she was there as a lecturer in the field International relations. Between 2006 and 2009, Foroutan taught at the Department of Politics of the Middle East at the Otto-Suhr-Institut of the Freie Universität Berlin, until she then switched to the Institute for Social Sciences of the Humboldt University of Berlin. From 2008 to 2013, together with her colleague Isabel Schäfer, she led the research project "hybrid European-Muslim identity models (HEYMAT)". The HEYMAT project was extended to 2013 by the Volkswagen Foundation until the year 2015. Since the extension, Naika Foroutan has led the HEYMAT project. The HEYMAT project was completed at the end of June 2015.[8]

In cooperation with the Mercator Foundation, Foroutan organized the "Young Islam conference-Berlin 2011" for the Humboldt University in Berlin.[9] In the year 2012, another "young Islam conference" was held under her leadership. During the conference it was announced that the "Young Islam Conference" and a corresponding research project "Young Islam-related issues in Germany" under Foroutans, would continue up to the year 2016, with two million euros funding by the Mercator foundation.[10] Since 2012, she is co-head of the research project "Concepts for the development of intelligence, Security and Prevention" (CODISP), sponsored by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.[11]
