She was one of the editors of the famous Bengali children's magazine Sandesh, which was started by Upendrakishore Ray Chowdhury in 1913. Early LifeNalini Das was born to Arunnath Chakraborty and Punyalata Ray Chowdhury. Her father was a deputy magistrate posted in Bihar, and mother, Punyalata, the daughter of the Bengali writer, technologist and entrepreneur Upendrakishore Ray Chowdhury.[1][4][2] Famous Bengali writer Sukumar Ray was her maternal uncle, and Oscar-winning filmmaker Satyajit Ray her cousin.[3] She completed her IA from St. John's Diocesan Girls' Higher Secondary School in Calcutta.[4] She studied Philosophy at Bethune College, Calcutta.[8] Professional And Literary CareerNalini Das was a member of the faculty of the Department of Philosophy and later served as the Principal (1968-1974) of Bethune College in Calcutta.[5] An award honouring her is given for best all-round performance in the college today.[6] The first female detectives of Bengali literature was created by Nalini Das.[7] Named "Goenda Gondalu" (The Lu Quartet in English translated by Swapna Dutta[8]), they are four young schoolgirls from the same hostel, who solve mysteries.[9] From 1964 till her death in 1993, she was one of the three editors of the Bengali children's magazine Sandesh, which operated out of her home at 172/3 Rashbehari Avenue.[10] Along with her elder sister, Kalyani Karlekar, in the 1930s and 1940s, she edited a women's magazine in Bengali named Meyeder Katha.[8] She wrote a book about the childhood days of her brother Satyajit Ray, which is named Shaat Rajar Dhon Ek Manik.[3] She edited several children's books along with Lila Majumdar and Satyajit Ray. Personal LifeNalini Das married Ashokananda Das, younger brother of Bengali poet Jibanananda Das.[1] [11] Writer and publisher Amitananda Das is their son.[12][13] AwardsNalini Das was awarded the Vidyasagar Memorial Award in 1990 by West Bengal Govt.[14] Bibliography
