}}Nang Ngumiti ang Langit (Lit: When the Heaven Smiles) is a 2019 Philippine drama television series starring Sophia Reola.[1] The series premiered on ABS-CBN's PrimeTanghali noontime block and worldwide on The Filipino Channel on March 25, 2019, replacing Playhouse.[2]

Synopsis

This fictional tale follows the life of a young orphan, Mikmik Dimaano, growing up in a mansion belonging to her mother's family, yet never accepted because they all believe her mother is the illegitimate daughter of the family patriarch, Don Gabriel Salvador with Letitia Dimaano (Isay Alvarez), Mikmik's grandmother. In truth, Letitia is Don Gabriel's first wife, whom he secretly marries early in his career, but forsakes for a life with Divina Salvador.

Ella

It begins with the story of Mikmik's mother, Ella Dimaano (Kaye Abad), who moves to live with her biological father, the wealthy real estate developer Don Gabriel Salvador, to fulfill her dream to attend College and become a doctor. Ella is fearful of being treated harshly by her father's wife Divina (Pilar Pilapil) because she believes she is his illegitimate daughter with her mother.

Before Ella was born, Don Gabriel leaves Letitia for the wealthy and beautiful Divina. Dazzled by her beauty and offer to invest in his business, Divina entices Gabriel to break away from Letitia. Heartbroken and pregnant with Ella, Letitia moves to the province, solely raising Ella, never once seeking help from Gabriel.

In the meantime, Divina instructs her lawyer and best friend, Nante (Victor Silayan/Teroy De Guzman), to destroy Gabriel's marriage records so she can marry Gabriel.

Their marriage is not a happy one. Unable to bear a child, Gabriel drifts away and becomes a workaholic. Though they adopt a child who Divina adores, Eric (Rafa Siguion-Reyna), is largely ignored by Gabriel, who feels no connection to his adopted son.

When Don Gabriel brings Ella to live with them, Divina is mortified. But surprisingly, Eric forges a strong bond with his sister and they become each other's supporter. The kind hearted Ella is loved by the household staff and she forms a tight friendship with Ruth, the Salvador Majordomo. Her father admires her intellectual capabilities as she consistently gets top marks in her academics. Divina despises her all the more.

Ella's life turns upside down when her father is assassinated. Her step mother quickly changes her status in the household and makes her a maid, unaware that her father named her his heir with rights to her inheritance as his legitimate child.

After the tragedy, Ella meets Michael Villaluna and the pair fall in love. They keep their relationship a secret because of complications within both families: Michael is the son of David Villaluna, a building contractor whose business relationship with the Salvadors turns sour after a catastrophic disaster with one of their projects. David Villaluna is blamed for Gabriel's assassination which occurred shortly after legal and labor disputes and charges were brought against the Villalunas, although no evidence to support the allegations exists.

Their relationship is exposed when Katrina, Michael's former fiancé, and Eric Salvador's new wife, becomes jealous of Ella. Divina promptly kicks her out of the Salvador mansion. Although Michael offers to care for Ella, fate destroys their future together when Eric arrives at the Villaluna mansion that evening and a violent fight occurs that ends tragically,

Earlier, after confronting his mother about Ella's banishment, Eric learns the truth about Ella's legitimacy and is appalled that his mother kept the truth from her. He decides to tell her the truth.

But upon arriving at the Villalunas, he and Michael have a violent argument blaming each other for Ella's banishment, and Eric is killed before he could tell her the truth about her legitimacy. Michael is arrested and goes to prison, while Ella returns to her hometown in the province. Pregnant with Michael's child, she decides to raise her child herself, as her mother once did, away from the Salvadors and the Villalunas.

Ella delivers a baby girl and names her Mikmik, and they both live in Ella's childhood home in the barrio. Their humble and peaceful existence is disrupted when Ella is diagnosed with an aggressive form of Leukemia. As they raise funds for Ella's chemotherapy, Mikmik discovers her mother's keepsake bag containing photographs and a letter from "E. Salvador". She assumes this is her father, and believes they would help her mother with the chemotherapy.

Divina cold heartedly rejects Mikmik’s pleas for assistance and Ella dies not long after. After Ella's passing, and despite Divina's earlier rejection, Mikmik still wants to connect with her mother's family. She is eventually taken in by her mother's best friend Ruth, and moves into the mansion as part of Ruth’s family. The significance of her identity is not lost on Divina and Katrina, creating conflict.

Katrina

Katrina de Leon (Cristine Reyes) has dreams of her own and is determined to fulfill it. In love with Michael Villaluna (RK Bagatsing), she is equally hopeful that marrying him will make her financially secure.

The catastrophic structural collapse of the Salvador building and subsequent assassination of Gabriel Salvador changes everything when Michael's father, David Villaluna, is blamed for both disasters. Michael confronts his father and demands that they owe up to the structural collapse but his father refuses. Michael, not wanting to be part of his father's unethical practices, voices out his plans to leave the family firm since he has long wanted to venture out on his own. Katrina is adamant he remain, and they quarrel, leading Michael to realize the stark differences in their respective values. He breaks up with her.

Angry, Katrina goes after Eric Salvador and marries him soon after she tells him she is pregnant. Divina, who suspects Katrina does not really love Eric, makes her sign a Prenuptial agreement.

Their marriage is short-lived, with nothing much said if it was a happy one. They have two daughters, Amber and Britney. She is pregnant with Britney when Eric is shot by Michael and dies.

Katrina is the main reason why Divina kicks out Ella from the mansion. Ella’s banishment leads to Eric’s discovery of his mother’s illegal marriage and it is why Eric drives out to set things right for Ella.

Katrina soon learns that her inheritance from Eric is not as she expects. Divina does not trust Katrina and makes sure all of Eric’s rightful assets are not in his name. Therefore, Katrina’s conjugal share is significantly diminished. She is forced to live under the grace and favor of her mother in law.

Mikmik

It is close to a decade after Ella is banished from the mansion, when Mikmik returns to live with the household staff, just as her mother did.

Treated with disdain by her cousins and cruelly by Katrina, Mikmik is determined to win their hearts. She fiercely believes in the sense of belonging to a family, hopeful they will accept her one day.

Careful not to create more issues for everyone, she restricts her comments about her affinity with the Salvadors to a few members in the mansion: Ruth, Benjie and her son Joseph. As far as the rest of the family and the household, Mikmik is Ella's daughter, the illegitimate side of Gabriel Salvador.

Although Divina knows she is Michael Villaluna’s daughter, she has a different agenda for allowing Mikmik to live in the mansion: use her against David Villaluna, knowing she is her enemy's only granddaughter.

Katrina, on the other hand, is furious that the child of her former fiancé and alleged killer of her husband is living in her home. She sets out to bully her but Divina stays her hand. Katrina nevertheless makes life miserable for Mikmik in everyway she can.
