Nardi Steverink is a Dutch Associate Professor of Sociology at the University of Groningen.

Early life

Nardi Steverink was born on an arable farm in Emmeloord along with her siblings Wim and Annet. At the time, the farm was leased by her father Theo Steverink. Her mother was Enne Bramel from Espel labor camp.[1]

Steverink dream job at first was to become a music teacher, so she pursued music career. In 1983 she obtained BMA in organ music from Conservatorium of Zwolle. Later on, she discovered that helping people with behavior is much more interesting profession. She pursued a four-year degree in psychology at the Utrecht University from which she graduated in 1987. During the time there, she spent interviewing various elderly people in their homes for the last year and help them assess proper nursing homes.[2]

Due to the lack of age-related jobs in her homeland Netherlands, she took two-year research assistant position at the Department of Medical Psychology of her alma mater. There, she studied cancer patients and their coping strategies with the disease. Nardi had obtained Ph.D. in social and behavioral sciences from the ICS. While doing her doctorate she worked for two years at the Northern Center for Healthcare Research, University of Groningen and upon graduating in 1996, became a postdoc at the Department of Psychogerontology at the Catholic University of Nijmegen (now Radboud University Nijmegen) where she spent four years.[2]

Career

Nardi Stevernik had returned to Groningen in 2000 where she met her partner and future husband. There, she became a member of the Department of Geriatrics (now the University Center for Geriatric Medicine) at the University Medical Center Groningen. Later on, she became a recipient of a grant from the Netherlands Organisation for Health Research and Development.[2]

In 2004 she became an associate professor of sociology at the Department of Geriatrics and in 2007 she moved to the Department of Health Sciences. The same year, she accepted a part time professorship at the Department of Sociology which later became her full time job and at which she teaches master's degree courses.[2]

In 2018 she studied elderly people in Duitse Huis and discovered that babysitting the elderly is beneficial for the health of the loved ones but if the care is too stressful then it goes the opposite way.[3]
