Rich is known for the memoir Scythe Tleppo, which outlines his experiences growing up in Scientology.[3] He also appeared on Scientology and the Aftermath alongside classmate Tara Reile to describe their experiences at the Scientology boarding school, The Mace-Kingsley Ranch School.[4] He worked as a technical executive in several companies and served as the Chief Technology Officer at a visual effects company in China called Base FX, until 2018[5], when he resigned and started a content company called Team Hotpot. In 2018, Team Hotpot released a video parodying Dolce & Gabbana's Shanghai event promotion video to Chinese social media.[6] The video got over 20 million views in a single day, eventually growing to over 100 million views.[7] It was widely circulated on Weibo, a major Chinese social media platform[8] and has been cited as a contributing factor to the cancellation of Dolce & Gabbana's Shanghai event and subsequent apology video from Dolce & Gabbana.[9] Mace-Kingsley RanchAt 8 years old, Rich was sent to the Scientology boarding school, the Mace-Kingsley Ranch in Palmdale, California, and then again at age 14.[10] Rich alleges the Ranch was an abusive environment, with punishments including being scrubbed with a metal fence brush and paddling from the staff.[11][12] BookIn his book Scythe Tleppo, Rich describes growing up in Los Angeles in a Scientology family, as well as traveling as a homeless man and how he eventually moved to China.[13] Attack video by ScientologyIn October 2018 Rich appeared on Scientology and the Aftermath. The Church of Scientology released an article and video featuring Rich's aunt and longtime Scientologist, author Sharon Rich, along with several other family members. In it, they claimed Rich was sent to the Mace-Kingsley Ranch because "the only other option was jail" (Rich was 8 years old when he was sent to the Ranch).[14] They also produced documents showing Rich's arrest record.[15] Personal lifeRich is the only child of Julie Miriam Rich, a pet communicator who died from cancer in 2010.[16] He completed only two school grades in his life - 7th and 8th grade, at Dunedin Academy. He spent four years at the Mace Kingsley Ranch when he was 8 and 14 years old. When he was 17 he ran away from home and was later disowned by his family. He spent seven years a homeless drug addict before eventually piecing his life together by going to community college.[17][18] His aunt Arlene works at the Scientology organization, the Mace Kingsley Family Center, in Florida.[19] His other aunt is author Sharon Rich. Both of his aunts appear in the Scientology attack video. Rich currently lives in China.[20] Video ContentRich's brand Team Hotpot has produced several videos, including a video parodying Dolce & Gabbana's Shanghai event promotion video, to Chinese social media.[21] The team also released a video parodying Lil Pump for his anti-Chinese slurs in the music video "Butterfly Doors." In 2019, the team released a set of videos about Western media's propaganda against China (in particular, The New York Times). One of the videos was re-posted by the Chinese central government via the Communist Youth League of China and The People's Daily. [22][23]. The league also published an article covering the video, with a transcript and additional content.[24][25] In January 2019, Team Hotpot released a video critical of a The New York Times-produced video called "Inside China's Predatory Healthcare System." Rich alleged their video was biased against China and had lies and intentional mistranslations. The video was widely circulated within China.[26][27][28][29][30][31] They released a video review for the film The Wandering Earth, which got over 1 million views in three days.[32] Rich was Chief Technology Officer at a company responsible for some of the visual effects of the film.
