It is native to eastern Asia, where it is found in China, Japan, Korea, and Taiwan.[2] In the United States it is commonly cultivated by nurseries as an ornamental, and it has been naturalized in the U.S. state of Virginia. It is expected to become invasive in temperate forests of North America in the future.[3] It is a deciduous shrub, growing to 2.5 meters tall. It has deeply lobed leaves, with prominent stipules. It produces panicles of small white flowers in late spring and early summer. Fruits are pubescent and around 2 mm long.[2][5] Its natural habitat is on low mountain slopes, often by streams.[2][4] It is considered to be a common species in Japan.[4] References1. ^{{cite web |url=http://www.herbarium.unc.edu/flora.htm |title= Flora of the Southern and Mid-Atlantic States |author= Alan Weakley |date= 2015}} {{Taxonbar|from=Q15545806}}2. ^1 2 Stephanandra incisa Flora of China 3. ^Neillia incisa Flora of North America 4. ^1 2 {{cite book |last=Ohwi |first=Jisaburo |date=1965 |title=Flora of Japan |url= |location= |publisher=Smithsonian Institution |page=519|isbn= |author-link= }} 1 : Amygdaloideae |
