释义 |
History1736 Samuel Staniforth was leasing the wheel from the Lord of the Manor and in 1745 he was paying ten shillings annually to rent half of the stream that ran the wheel. This was the same Samuel Staniforth whose son Thomas Staniforth established Thomas Staniforth & Co in 1743 in the nearby village of Hackenthorpe. By 1774 Thomas Staniforth was paying rent on the wheel. A wage list belonging to Hutton & Co, dated 26th March - 4th June 1796 shows the following workers being present at the wheel: Joseph Carr, William Key, George Barker, William Whitfield and John Pimperton, all working 6 day weeks for 2s 8d a day, or 16s a week. By May, John Widdowson and John Widdowson Jr had replaced Barker and Whitfield, and a Thomas Newton was on the payroll.[2] Thomas Staniforth of Hackenthorpe, Joseph Hutton of Ridgeway and Luke Staniforth of Mosborough Moorhole were all leasing the wheel at this time. By 1836 Hutton & Co owned the wheel, with Thomas Hutton, brother of Ezra Hutton is listed as owner.[3] On October 21 1874 the Huttons held an auction with the wheel being included however on the death of John Jermyn Hutton in 1886, property was partitioned and the now unoccupied 'Upper Birley Moor Wheel' was retained by the family.{{cn|date=January 2019}} The wheel stood unused throughout the 20th Century, and today nothing more than the boundary walls remain, now part of the Shire Brook Valley Local Nature Reserve.[4] References1. ^{{cite web|url=https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/194511|title=Geograph:: Remains of Nether Wheel, Woodhouse (C) David Morris|website=www.geograph.org.uk}} {{coord missing|South Yorkshire}}2. ^History of the manor and parish of Beighton (T.L.
