HistoryIn the 1930s, Ralph Tropiano, aka Whitey moved to Brooklyn and became possibly part of Murder, Inc. In 1969 the New Haven Mafia was run by Ralph Tropiano, after he had come home from New York City, sharing it with Salvatore Annunziato.and Eugene Daniele He dealt in gambling, running numbers and street loans, and owned a garbage truck with the intent of controlling the trash market. William P. Grasso, also known as "Wild Guy," and the self-proclaimed Bridgeport Independent Refuse Collectors Association told competitors that the Mafia would send trucks of henchmen to beat them up. This caused Grasso to be arrested for extortion and conspiracy. He served a term of ten years in a federal prison in Atlanta. In prison he shared a cell with Raymond L.S. Patriarca, a bootlegger from the Great Depression who once ran Patriarca, which was the most powerful crime family of New England at the time. Grasso later called this the "best thing that ever happened to [him.]" The two became allies. In 1973, he controlled large portions of Connecticut and western Massachusetts. In 1984, Patriarca died and was succeeded by his son Raymond. Grasso became the underboss, but in reality had more control. His men betrayed him and started a rift in the crime family, a struggle that would eventually get him killed. By this time he owned a restaurant in Hartford named Franco's, and gained money from stealing, insurance scams, and other criminal activities. John F. Castagna, also known as Sonny, said people had been killed for not handing over their share of the money. A boxer was shot dead after punching Grasso in the face outside of Franco's due to an argument. criminals that competed against the family were selectively assassinated. For example, John "Slew" Palmieri of the Gambino crime family, fresh from prison 1n 1974 was killed by a car bomb after coming to New Haven. In '79, Salvatore Annunziato, known better as Midge Renault, of the Genovese crime family, disappeared. In 1980, Thomas "Tommy the Blond" Vastano, also of the Genovese family, was shot in his backyard. Tropiano was killed in New York City in a drive by shooting. In 1981, Frank Piccolo was killed. Grasso began controlling more in the North of Connecticut, and in Rhode Island. He attacked a man for backing down from paying $20,000 from gambling, and forced Tony Volpe to retire from the Genovese family. In 1989, he was killed by Patriarca. Meanwhile, in Boston, underboss Frank "Cadillac Frank" Salemme was shot but lived. The rival factions made up. Grasso's body was dumped in a patch of poison ivy in Wethersfield by the side of the Connecticut River. Eugene “Rooster” Onofrio a long time member and Capo with the New York Genovese family operated out of his home in East Haven until February 2018 when he was sentenced to 30 months in prison for his part in the East Coast La Cosa Nostra Enterprises case that saw over 46 members of organized crime from New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Florida being arrested by the FBI. According to the FBI court documents, Onofrio in addition to running a crew in Springfield Mass and running imprisioned Genovese Capo Conrad Ianiello’s Little Italy Crew, was also running the East Coast La Cosa Nostra Enterprise along with, Philadelphia Mafia Boss Joseph “Skinny Joe” Merlino and fellow Genovese Capo Pasquale “Patsy” Parrello.
