U.S.. HistoryThe land was granted to John White, a settler from South Carolina, in 1808.[2] His son, Newton White, a slaveholder, built the house in 1840.[2] It was designed in the Greek Revival architectural style.[2] After Newton White died in 1891, his widow Courtney White continued to live in the house until it was inherited by their nephew, George S. White.[2] By 1925, it was sold to the Whitt family, who sold it to the Walter Christopher family in 1943.[2] The house has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since October 22, 1987.[3] References1. ^{{NRISref|version=2010a}} {{National Register of Historic Places}}{{DEFAULTSORT:White, Newton, House}}{{Tennessee-NRHP-stub}}2. ^1 2 3 4 {{cite web|title=National Register of Historic Places Registration Form: White, Newton, House|url=http://focus.nps.gov/GetAsset?assetID=2ad2cbb0-9e32-47ba-a491-d585c8d0b94e|website=National Park Service|accessdate=August 27, 2016}} 3. ^{{cite web|title=White, Newton, House|url=http://focus.nps.gov/AssetDetail/NRIS/87001884|website=National Park Service|accessdate=August 27, 2016}} 4 : Houses on the National Register of Historic Places in Tennessee|Greek Revival houses in Tennessee|Houses completed in 1840|Houses in Giles County, Tennessee |
