He was the eldest son of Ngô Quyền, the founder of Ngô dynasty. Ngô Quyền died in 944. Quyền named Dương Tam Kha as regent to support Ngô Xương Ngập on his deathbed. But after Quyền's death, Dương Tam Kha forced Ngập to abdicate and installed himself as king. Ngập fled to Trà Hưong village, Nam Sách, and was hidden by Phạm Lệnh Công. Dương Tam Kha sent Đỗ Cảnh Thạc and Dương Cát Lợi to arrest him, which made Phạm Lệnh Công afraid, and hid him in a cave.[1][2] In 950, Dương Tam Kha was dethroned by Ngập's younger brother, Ngô Xương Văn. Văn crowned himself "Nam Tấn Vương" ("King of Nam Tấn"), and summoned Ngập to the capital. Ngập became the co-ruler of Ngô dynasty, and crowned himself "Thiên Sách Vương" ("King of Thiên Sách").[1] It was called một nước hai vua ("one country, two kings") in Vietnamese history. Both of them used the title "Hậu Ngô Vương" (後吳王). Ngập held the real power and Văn didn't take part in any political affair util Ngập's death.[2] Ngập died during consensual sex in 954. He had two son mentioned in history records: Ngô Xương Xí, one of Twelve Warlords; Khuông Việt, an important Buddhist monk and politician during Đinh dynasty.
