In 965, Ngô Xương Văn was killed in the battlefield. Xí became the leader of Ngô clan. He retreated to Bình Kiều (mordern Triệu Sơn District, Thanh Hóa Province), and titled himself Ngô sứ quân (吳使君).[1][2] Xí was defeated by Đinh Bộ Lĩnh in 968.
