Early life and careerBorn in Terre Haute, Indiana, Hood was treated for a spinal deformity. In 1945, Hood graduated from Purdue University and then went to North Central College in Naperville, Illinois for one year. Hood graduated from Yale Divinity School in 1949. Hood then became the pastor of the Central Congregational Church in New Orleans, Louisiana. From 1958 to 1984, Hood served as pastor of the Plymouth Congregational Church in Detroit, Michigan. He was involved in the civil rights movement in New Orleans and Detroit. From 1965 to 1994, Hood served on the Detroit City Council.
