It is owned by the Nigerien military but built and paid for by the United States. When completed, it will be operated by the U.S. military as a drone base. As of February 2018, the site consists of a runway, still under construction, a hangar, and numerous smaller buildings for soldiers to work and live in.[7] OperationsThe U.S. military presence at Base 201 began on April 19, 2016.[8] Once complete, the runway will be big enough to accommodate both MQ-9 Reaper armed drones as well as the much larger C-17 transport airplanes.[7] Construction was scheduled to be completed by the end of 2018.[9] However, delays have pushed the completion estimate to mid-2019. [10] Runway construction is being undertaken by the 31st Expeditionary Rapid Engineer Deployable Heavy Operational Repair Squadron Engineers.[11] As of November 2018, no ISR aircraft are presently operating out of the base.[13] ConstructionThe amount of US$50 million was approved by Congress for the base, but the cost may end up exceeding $100 million.[12][13] The base was originally planned to be operational by the end of 2018, but delays have caused the completion date of the base to be pushed to mid-2019.[14] The Air Base was described by U.S. officials as the largest construction project led by the United States Air Force.[14] References1. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.newsweek.com/us-building-50-million-drone-base-niger-504522|title=Could this drone base in Niger increase U.S. military operations in Africa?|date=30 September 2016|publisher=}} 2. ^{{cite web|url=https://edition.cnn.com/2017/07/21/africa/niger-agadez-smuggling-us-drone-base/index.html|title=This city is a tinderbox, and the US is building a drone base next door|first=Arwa Damon, Brent Swails and Brice Laine, CNN, in Agadez,|last=Niger|publisher=}} 3. ^{{cite web|url=https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/africa/a-city-in-niger-worries-a-new-us-drone-base-will-make-it-a-magnet-for-terrorists/2017/11/23/0b62fbf4-cef3-11e7-a87b-47f14b73162a_story.html|title=A city in Niger worries a new U.S. drone base will make it a ‘magnet’ for terrorists|first1=Sudarsan|last1=Raghavan|first2=Craig|last2=Whitlock|date=24 November 2017|publisher=|via=www.washingtonpost.com}} 4. ^{{cite web|url=https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/national-security/pentagon-set-to-open-second-drone-base-in-niger-as-it-expands-operations-in-africa/2014/08/31/365489c4-2eb8-11e4-994d-202962a9150c_story.html|title=Pentagon is set to open second drone base in Niger as it broadens counterterrorism operations in West Africa|first=Craig|last=Whitlock|date=1 September 2014|publisher=|via=www.washingtonpost.com}} 5. ^{{cite web|url=https://www.reuters.com/article/us-niger-security/u-s-building-100-million-drone-base-in-central-niger-idUSKCN12023L|title=U.S. building $100 million drone base in central Niger|date=30 September 2016|publisher=|via=Reuters}} 6. ^{{Cite news|url=https://www.stripes.com/news/africa/a-city-in-niger-worries-new-us-drone-base-will-make-it-a-magnet-for-terrorists-1.499322|title=A city in Niger worries new US drone base will make it a ‘magnet’ for terrorists|work=Stars and Stripes|access-date=2018-08-21}} 7. ^1 {{cite web|url=https://theintercept.com/2018/02/18/niger-air-base-201-africom-drones/|title=Drones in the Sahara: A Massive U.S. Drone Base Could Destabilize Niger — and May Even Be Illegal Under Its Constitution|first=Joe|last=Penney|date=18 February 2018|publisher=}} 8. ^{{cite web |url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zhbtIEeYqMA |access-date=December 3, 2018 |publisher=YouTube |author=438th Air Expeditionary Group |date=April 19, 2017 |title=Review of the 724 EABS' First Year in Niger}} 9. ^{{cite news |publisher=Foreign Policy |title=Shadowy U.S. Drone War in Africa Set to Expand |date=September 4, 2018 |first=Lara |last=Seligman |url=https://foreignpolicy.com/2018/09/04/shadowy-u-s-drone-war-in-africa-set-to-expand/}} 10. ^ {{cite web |url=https://www.airforcetimes.com/news/your-air-force/2019/01/03/new-in-2019-two-new-us-airbases-in-africa-nearing-completion |title=New in 2019: Two new US air bases in Africa nearing completion |first=Kyle|last=Rempfer |publisher=Air Force Times|date=January 4, 2019}} 11. ^{{cite web |url=https://www.usafe.af.mil/News/Article-Display/Article/1670767/red-horse-tests-materials-equipment-for-future-flight-line/ |title=RED HORSE tests materials, equipment for future flight line |first=Rachelle |last=Coleman |publisher=United States Air Forces in Europe - Air Forces Africa |date=October 24, 2018 |quote=U.S. Air Force 31st Expeditionary Rapid Engineer Deployable Heavy Operation Repair Squadron Engineer Airmen prepare a flight line test strip on Nigerien Air Base 201, Agadez, Niger, Oct. 19, 2018.}} 12. ^[https://theintercept.com/2016/09/29/u-s-military-is-building-a-100-million-drone-base-in-africa/ U.S. MILITARY IS BUILDING A $100 MILLION DRONE BASE IN AFRICA], Nick Turse, The Intercept, 2016-09-29 13. ^[https://theintercept.com/2018/02/18/niger-air-base-201-africom-drones/ DRONES IN THE SAHARA: A Massive U.S. Drone Base Could Destabilize Niger — and May Even Be Illegal Under Its Constitution], Joe Penney, The Intercept, 2018-02-19 14. ^1 2 {{cite news |url=https://www.airforcetimes.com/news/your-air-force/2018/11/19/completion-of-us-drone-base-in-niger-to-be-delayed/ |publisher=Air Force Times |first=Kyle |last=Rempfer |title=Completion of US drone base in Niger to be delayed |date=November 19, 2018}} External links
