She currently serves as a member of the Georgia State Senate for District 39, succeeding Vincent Fort in a special election in 2017 after his resignation to compete in the Atlanta mayoral election. She currently serves as Chair[1] of the Democratic Party of Georgia, and was a delegate to the 2008, 2012 and 2016 Democratic National Conventions. Prior to being elected as state senator, Williams served as vice-president of Public Policy for Planned Parenthood Southeast.[2] She is a graduate of Talladega College.[3] She is the third woman and second African American to chair the party. In January 2019 Williams became the first Black woman elected to lead the Georgia Democratic Party.[4] Nikema Williams was arrested during a protest at the Georgia State Capital on November 13, 2018.[5] The arrest was made despite her not taking part in the protest or doing anything wrong, and she has since talked about the issue of racial profiling in arrests.[6] References1. ^https://www.ajc.com/news/state--regional-govt--politics/meet-nikema-williams-the-newly-elected-leader-georgia-democrats/aO7iTKsTyelrt9jrNRJ7qK/ {{s-start}}{{s-ppo}}{{s-bef|before=Mike Berlon}}{{s-ttl|title=Chair of the Georgia Democratic Party2. ^{{cite web|url=https://www.georgiademocrat.org/about/officers/nikema-williams |title=NIKEMA WILLIAMS |author= |date= |website=GeorgiaDemocrat.org |publisher= |access-date=15 November 2018 |quote=}} 3. ^http://www.senate.ga.gov/senators/en-US/member.aspx?Member=4919&Session=25 4. ^{{Cite news|url=https://www.ajc.com/news/state--regional-govt--politics/meet-nikema-williams-the-newly-elected-leader-georgia-democrats/aO7iTKsTyelrt9jrNRJ7qK/|title=Meet Nikema Williams, the newly elected leader of Georgia’s Democrats|last=Prabhu|first=Maya|date=January 28, 2019|work=AJC|access-date=}} 5. ^{{Cite news|url=https://www.motherjones.com/politics/2018/11/georgia-state-senator-nikema-williams-arrest-1/|title="Senator, Why Are You Being Arrested?"|last=Butler|first=Kiera|date=November 17, 2018|work=Mother Jones|access-date=}} 6. ^{{Cite news|url=https://www.usatoday.com/story/opinion/policing/2019/02/14/georgia-unlawful-arrest-police-brutality-black-women-policing-the-usa/2854252002/|title=Black female senator: My arrest shows the bias that still exists in justice system|last=Williams|first=Nikema|date=February 14, 2019|work=USA Today|access-date=}} Acting|years=2013}}{{s-aft|after=DuBose Porter}} |-{{s-bef|before=DuBose Porter}}{{s-ttl|title=Chair of the Georgia Democratic Party|years=2019–present}}{{s-inc}}{{s-end}}{{Democratic State Chairs}}{{Georgia State Senators}}{{Democratic Party of Georgia}} 10 : 1972 births|21st-century American women politicians|21st-century American politicians|African-American state legislators in Georgia (U.S. state)|Georgia (U.S. state) Democrats|Georgia (U.S. state) state senators|Living people|State political party chairs of Georgia (U.S. state)|Talladega College alumni|Women state legislators in Georgia (U.S. state) |
