His work in photography is internationally acclaimed. Early life and educationGera completed his early education in New Delhi and then joined his family's confectionary business. In 1999, he started an exporting business named Picasso Exports which sells temporary tattoos and mehndi.[4] Gera eventually developed an interest in photography and joined the Triveni Kala Sangam art academy.[6][7] During his time there, Gera was a student of the renowned photographer O.P. Sharma and acquired a strong knowledge of photography.[8] Career in photographyAs a professional photographer, Niraj Gera focused his creativity in portraits, street photography, travel photography, and social documentary photography. His works have been exhibited in various art galleries around the world. WorksGera's social documentary series Sacred Transformations was featured worldwide; it is a pictorial representation of the emotional journey experienced by survivors of acid attacks.[9][10][11] BackgroundWhen acid attack survivors announced their protest at Jantar Mantar[12] in New Delhi in 2014,[13][14] against the open sale of acid, asking the government to ensure strict regulation for the same, he attended the event out of curiosity. As per Mail Online, a UK's News Website, Gera met the acid attack survivors at a protest three years ago and was so moved by their journeys that he decided to help campaign against acid violence with the collection of powerful images. And thus was born the idea of ‘Sacred Transformations’. It took Gera more than two years – meeting the women, interacting with them, and documenting their inspiring journeys – to put together a collection of 42 photographs which was exhibited at Aparna Caur Gallery. The compilation was first exhibited in the "Arpana Caur Art Gallery"[15][16] (New Delhi). It has since then, won several Awards in variously reputed photography competition like, CEPIC[17] Award, Ozone Zone International Photo Competition,[18] Hon’ble mention in the International Photographer of the Year (IPOTY-16).[7] It has also been published by several media portals like Al Jazeera,[9] Hindustan Times,[19] India Today,[20] PopSugar (US),[1] Metropolitan Magazine,[21] Business Standard, Yahoo![22] and MSN.
