The North American Mycoflora Project is a collaboration between professional mycologists and citizen scientists to create a comprehensive online compendium of all species of macroscopic fungi (macrofungi) in North America. The project encourages amateurs, working with professionals, to collect, document, preserve dried specimens, and sequence DNA of macrofungi throughout the continent. The project is overseen by the North American Mycoflora Project, Inc., a charitable 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization registered in Indiana, USA.[1]

History

In 2012, some 70 academic mycologists and scientific-oriented mushroom collectors met at Yale University to discuss the long-term goal of producing “a modern, comprehensive mycoflora of macrofungi for North America.”[2][3] In 2017, at a meeting in Athens, Georgia, the project was reframed as a citizen science initiative. [4] The North American Mycoflora Project, Inc., was formally established in December 2017. [5]

Methodology

Mushroom clubs and individuals register projects on the Mycoflora Project website. Protocols require that each specimen have:

  • Color photographs taken where the fungus was collected.
  • Metadata that includes date of collection and geolocation information.
  • Photographs and associated metadata are uploaded to iNaturalist or Mushroom Observer.
  • Dried specimens are sent to a curated fungarium or herbarium, and accession number is reported to the Mycology Collections Data Portal (MyCoPortal).[6]
  • A small sample of the fresh specimen is sent to a lab for DNA analysis of the internal transcribed spacer gene. DNA sequences are posted in individual projects on the Mycoflora project website[7], reviewed, then posted to GenBank.
