The NXT North American Championship is a professional wrestling championship created and promoted by the American professional wrestling promotion WWE for their NXT brand. It is the brand's secondary title and was introduced at the NXT tapings on March 7, 2018 (aired March 28).[1][2] Adam Cole was the inaugural champion. The current champion is Velveteen Dream, who is in his first reign.

History

The championship was first introduced at the March 7, 2018, tapings of NXT (aired on tape delay on March 28) when NXT general manager William Regal announced a ladder match at New Orleans to determine the inaugural champion. Later that night, EC3, Killian Dain, Adam Cole, Ricochet, Lars Sullivan, and Velveteen Dream were announced as the participants in the match.[1][3] The winner of the match was Adam Cole. The match later received a 5-Star rating from Dave Meltzer.

The design of the belt was unveiled by Chief Operating Officer Triple H on April 3, 2018. Featuring three gold plates on a thick brown leather strap, the rounded center plate features a globe that only shows the continent of North America. The banner above the globe reads "North American" and above the banner is the NXT logo. The lower banner at the bottom of the globe reads "Champion". The two sideplates feature a removable center section which can be customized with the champion's logos; the default sideplates vertically read NXT on a globe, making it WWE's first secondary title to feature removable side plates.[4]

Reigns

As of {{CURRENTMONTHNAME}} {{CURRENTDAY}}, {{CURRENTYEAR}}, there have been four champions with one reign each. The inaugural champion was Adam Cole. Ricochet is the longest reigning champion at 161 days. Johnny Gargano has the shortest reign at 4 days (WWE recognizes it as 25 days due to tape delay, but still the shortest), and is the oldest champion, winning the title at 31. Velveteen Dream is the youngest champion, winning the title at 23.

Velveteen Dream is the current champion in his first reign. He won the title by defeating Johnny Gargano at the NXT tapings on January 30, 2019 in Winter Park, Florida (aired on February 20).
