词条 Oak Grove Marine Corps Outer Landing Field
释义

  1. References

The Oak Grove Marine Corps Outer Landing Field in Oak Grove, Jones County, North Carolina was an airfield constructed during World War II for use by the United States Marine Corps.[1]

The site was selected in 1942 as for a satellite airfield of MCAS Cherry Point, with the acquisition of 976 acres. By 1943, three runways were constructed, and in 1944 Marine Air Group 51 was commissioned to operate out of the facility. Following the war, the facility failed to attain permanent station status. By the mid 1960s it was abandoned, and its runways were being used for drag racing by locals who had broken into the surrounding gate. Once this activity was discovered, the field was more effectively secured and guarded. In the 1970s, it was renovated for new military use. As of 2005, the field was still in use, primarily as a practice field.[1]
