HistoryThe group was formed in 2011 by Gigi Brisson[2]. Recent activityIn 2016, members of the group visited Cuba as part of a delegation to meet leaders from government, academia and civil society. The goal of the visit was to learn about the measures that have been taken to protect the local marine ecosystems.[3] In 2017, Ocean Elders wrote to Malcolm Turnbull (then Prime Minister of Australia) with petition to reject the Carmichael coal mine, proposed by Adani Group. The activists argued that the coal mine would have a devastating impact on the Great Barrier Reef.[4][5] References1. ^{{Cite web|url=http://www.oceanelders.org/ocean-elders/|title=The Ocean Elders|last=|first=|date=|website=|archive-url=|archive-date=|dead-url=|access-date=}} 2. ^{{Cite web|url=http://www.oceanelders.org/about-us/|title=About Us|last=|first=|date=|website=|archive-url=|archive-date=|dead-url=|access-date=}} 3. ^{{Cite web|url=http://democracyinamericas.org/announcement/cuba-oceanelders-delegation/|title=OE visits Cuba|last=|first=|date=|website=|archive-url=|archive-date=|dead-url=|access-date=}} 4. ^{{cite web|title='Ocean Elders' urge Malcolm Turnbull to reject Adani coalmine|url=https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2017/jun/22/ocean-elders-urge-malcolm-turnbull-to-reject-adani-coalmine|publisher=The Guardian}} 5. ^{{cite web|title=OCEAN ELDERS URGE GOVERNMENT TO STOP ADANI|url=http://www.nationalgeographic.com.au/australia/update-ocean-elders-urge-government-to-stop-adani.aspx|publisher=National Geographic}} External links
